Neighbourhood Day on September 26th: how to organise a successful neighbourhood party

Neighbourhood Day in 2026 is on Saturday, September 26. A five-step plan: calculate numbers, food and drinks without a kitchen, keeping children entertained, decoration, and cleaning up.
There's an A4 paper in the porch: "Neighborhood party on Saturday, September 26th, who's in?" Seven names are listed at the bottom. Two weeks later, it turns out no one has arranged tables, there are only enough cups for fifteen people, and the children are glued to their phones after half an hour. What a waste, because a neighborhood party doesn't depend on budget but on a few practical choices you make six weeks in advance.
Burendag (Neighborhood Day) is held every year on the last Saturday of September. In 2026, that will be Saturday, September 26th. The Oranje Fonds website (burendag.nl) provides information on how to register your activity and apply for a contribution for neighborhood initiatives; check there if the application period for this year is still open and what conditions apply. If you want to close off the street or place something on public land, you usually need permission or to notify your municipality — the rules vary per municipality, so check your local council's website.
Step 1: count first, then order
Most miscalculations happen because someone thinks in terms of "about thirty". Make it concrete. Walk down the street or put a list in the neighborhood app with three columns: adults, children, might-come. Then use these rules of thumb:
Per adult, 3 to 4 cups over an afternoon — people put their cup down and grab a new one.
Per child, 2 cups plus 1 straw.
Add 20% to the number of "might-come" registrations, not to the total.
On the street, you don't have a sink, a tap, and usually no power outlet. Therefore, choose things that you can prepare cold and that won't tip over. A Juice, Syrup, and Honey Dispenser (€19.95) saves pouring and spills with lemonade, and a Space Gun Ketchup and Mustard Dispenser (€17.95) keeps the sauces for the barbecue in one place.
This is the part that is most often forgotten and yields the most. Children who have something to do keep their parents on the street longer. You don't need a bouncy castle; three games on the pavement are enough, provided they take up little space and can withstand a beating.
Step 4: decorations that stand out from the corner
Decorations have one function: to show that there's something going on, even for neighbors who missed the note. Therefore, place something tall at the entrance of the street instead of putting everything on the tables. A Balloon Arch (€30.00) is an investment you'll use for years — note that the balloons are not included. Fill it with a Foil Balloon Set of 6 pieces (€10.00). If it continues past sunset — in late September it gets dark around 8 PM — then LED Balloons, 5 pieces (€2.95) do more for the atmosphere than an extra string of bunting.
Who does what
Divide four roles and put them with names in the neighborhood app: one person who orders the supplies and keeps the receipts, one who arranges the tables and chairs, one who supervises the children, and one who starts cleaning up. The latter is more important than it sounds: if one person starts cleaning up at four o'clock, the rest will naturally help.
Step 5: clean up and save for next year
Count on two garbage bags per twenty guests and place them in two locations, not just one. What remains intact — games, dispensers, the balloon arch, unopened cups — goes into one box with a label on it, so you don't start over next year. A Moving Box 480 x 430 x 330 mm, 50 liters (€3.50) is large enough for the complete neighborhood party supplies and stacks flat in the attic. Write on the side what's inside and what you need to order more of next year — that note will be worth gold in eleven months.
One last tip: buy whistles. Keychains with Whistle, 5 pieces (€7.95) cost next to nothing and are the only way to get fifty people quiet at once if you want to announce something.
