Gift wrapping: how to make the packaging half the gift

The right box, a neat filling, and a matching color make wrapping the most enjoyable part. Practical choices for gift-givers and for webshops looking to send their orders in a more beautiful way.
You've found the perfect gift, and then the night before, you're left with a roll of tearing paper and a hastily wrapped package. What a shame, because the moment of unwrapping is precisely when your thoughtfulness becomes visible.
Good packaging doesn't have to be expensive. Below: which box type suits which gift, how to fill it so nothing rattles, which colors convey which message, and why this matters for webshops' revenue.
Why Packaging Determines the Gift's Impact
The packaging is the first thing someone sees, and that image colors everything that follows. A sleek box with a lid that opens smoothly gives the impression of thoughtfulness. A flimsy box that falls open as soon as you pick it up does the opposite. Furthermore, a box protects and often lies in a drawer for years afterward, while gift wrap disappears into the bin within ten seconds.
Rule of thumb: the smaller and more valuable the gift, the more important the packaging. A piece of jewelry in a cardboard box with filler feels very different from the same jewelry in a plastic bag.
For sweets or a small surprise package, a box with a handle is more practical than a bag: it keeps its shape. The yellow treat box with handle 15x8x8 cm costs €2.99.

How to Fill a Box So Nothing Rattles
Rattling immediately makes a nice box feel cheap. Filling it takes a minute and solves the problem.
Choose the right size box. More than two to three centimeters of space around the item is almost impossible to fill neatly.
First, lay a bottom layer. This gives the gift a soft base and lifts it slightly, making it more visible.
Place the gift in the center and fill around it. It should be snug, not jammed.
Do the shake test. Put the lid on and gently tilt it. If you feel movement, add more filler.
Finish the top with a thin layer, so the gift isn't immediately exposed upon opening.
For decorative filling, pink foam hearts (approx. 77 pieces) for €4.99 are an easy choice. If the gift is being mailed, first wrap it in bubble wrap (€12.95) and keep the decorative filling purely for show.
For Valentine's Day, an anniversary, or Mother's Day, you don't need to add much if the box already carries the color. The pink shipping box 15x10x4 cm and the red variant both cost €1.99. If you want something more playful, the holographic shipping box 20x13x3 cm for €3.99 adds shimmer without loose glitter.
For Webshops: The Unboxing Determines if Someone Returns
If you sell online, the package is the only physical point of contact with your customer; everything before that was a screen. This makes the unboxing disproportionately important: it's the only time someone literally holds your brand in their hands.
What works is not theatrics, but consistency: a box that matches the product, nothing shifting, a neat closure, and possibly a card. Customers primarily remember if it looked well-cared-for, and that translates into fewer returns due to transit damage and a greater chance that they will order directly from you for their next purchase.
Sustainable Packaging: Cardboard Instead of Plastic
Cardboard has one advantage that few alternatives have: it goes straight into the paper recycling, without anyone having to think about separation. Gift wrap with foil layers, glitter, or plastic ribbon cannot do that. So, you achieve a lot with small substitutions.
If you're shipping orders, look at recycled letterbox boxes A6 (bundle of 100) for €17.95 or the A5+ size (bundle of 100) for €24.00. If you're giving the gift in person, a cardboard carrier bag for €3.00 is often sufficient. Sustainable doesn't have to be boring: a sleek white or black box with a well-filled interior often looks calmer and more expensive than three layers of glossy paper.
