A gift for a fan: choosing merchandise and collectibles without making a bad purchase

Someone who loves a particular series, game, or character might seem easy to buy a gift for—until you're standing in the store. Here's how to choose merchandise that will actually be used instead of put away.
Someone who loves a single series, game, or character seems like the easiest gift of the year. Until you actually have to choose something. Because the true fan already has the well-known items, knows exactly which version is the right one, and has a strong opinion about what should and shouldn't be in their collection. A gift that's just a little off ends up in a drawer.
The good news: you don't need to know as much as the recipient. You mainly need to make a few choices that have little to do with the franchise and a lot to do with how someone will use the item. Now is a great time to think about it: whoever is buying gifts for a birthday, Sinterklaas, or December in the autumn still has plenty of time to compare.
First question: utilitarian object or display piece?
This is the most important distinction, and it determines almost everything else.
A utilitarian object blends into daily life: a mug, a mouse pad, a keychain, a phone holder. The risk is small, because even if the print isn't quite their favorite, someone will use it. A Squid Game Mug of 325 ml (€8.00) will be on the desk tomorrow. An XXL Gaming Mouse Pad of 900x400 mm with A5 notebook (€29.99) will be used daily by anyone sitting behind a PC.
A display piece — a figure, a set in a box — goes into the cabinet and competes with what's already there. This requires more knowledge of the recipient: what style, what series, what scale. A South Park Vinyl Figures Set with 5 characters (€14.95) works well because you give five characters at once: the chance that none of them click is small.
Not sure how much of a fanatic someone is? Then choose the utilitarian object. Collectors are picky about their cabinets, but no one is picky about a mug.
Pay attention to the size — more often the deal-breaker than taste
Merchandise is estimated to be larger or smaller online than it is. Therefore, always look at the measurements in the product name, not the photo.
A mouse pad of 900x400 mm is a desk mat: it covers the entire surface. Measure to see if it fits.
Merchandise has a few classic misunderstandings. They are almost always in the product name, if you pay attention.
Code or disc? For games, that's a fundamental difference. Transformers Battlegrounds for Nintendo Switch (€9.95) is a physical download code — fun and sharply priced, but nothing to put in a collection of cartridges. For those who want everything physical, this is not the right format.
Duplicate is death. For a dedicated fan, the chance of a duplicate is high. In that case, choose something from a different angle than the core: a utilitarian object instead of another figure.
Taste over brand. Not every fan wants their hobby on their keyring. Some people prefer to keep their interests private; then a mug or mouse pad is better than something visible.
Meme gifts age. Jokes around internet culture, such as a Crypto Meme Mug of 300 ml (€8.00) or the Heat-Sensitive Mug Hodl To The Moon (€8.00), land well with those who are in the thick of it — and mean little to those who aren't. So know who you're buying for.
Maintenance: how to make it last
A gift that's dull after three washes is no gift. A few practical points:
Printed mugs benefit from hand washing. Heat-sensitive mugs especially: the coating doesn't like harsh wash cycles.
Vinyl figures discolour in direct sunlight. Don't put them on the windowsill and keep the box if the recipient is a collector — that counts.
Fabric mouse pads can be cleaned with a damp cloth and some hand soap; let them dry on a towel, not on the radiator.
And then: getting it to the recipient intact
If you're shipping the gift, packaging is half the battle. Figures in a collector's box are particularly fragile because the box itself is part of the gift: wrap it with some padding and place it in a larger shipping box, not tight against the wall. Mugs travel best upright, with filler inside the mug itself and around it.
First, decide whether you're giving something to use or to display, then choose the franchise. Browse Merchandise for figures, mugs, and accessories, Films & Series for gifts related to well-known titles, and Keychains for small gifts and giveaways.
