A gift for someone who has everything: use it up, wear it out, or stand out

Someone who already has everything, mainly has no more space. Three categories of gifts that circumvent this problem: things that are consumed, things that replace something worn out, and things that no one buys for themselves.
You're in a store or scrolling through an online shop for someone you know has no empty closet space at home. The candle holders are there, the mugs no longer fit in the kitchen cabinet, and the last time you brought something nice, it ended up at a flea market six months later. The problem isn't that the person doesn't like anything. The problem is there's no more room.
That changes the question. Not: what does this person like? But: what will disappear on its own, or what replaces something that's already used up? From that question, three categories remain that almost always work well.
Category 1: Things that get used up
Consumables are the safest choice for a full house. They temporarily take up space and then disappear. No one has to keep them out of politeness.
What also makes consumables pleasant: you don't have to perfectly match the recipient's taste. A scent that's not quite right will be gone in three weeks anyway. A vase that doesn't fit will still be there in three years.
Category 2: Replacing something worn out
Everyone has two or three items they use daily that are in bad shape: the cracked mug, the leaky water bottle, the worn-out keychain. Such a person won't buy it themselves because it still "just works."
The trick is paying attention. If you're visiting someone, take a look at what's broken or missing. If there's a sixth glass missing from the cabinet, the Shot Glass Set of 6 pieces 60 ml for €3.00 is a gift that will be used immediately. Such an observation is worth more than an hour of searching on gift sites.
Category 3: Things no one buys for themselves
The third approach is the opposite: something so specific or unnecessary that the recipient would never buy it themselves, but will laugh at it or secretly like it.
Buying bigger to compensate. The more expensive and larger the gift, the heavier the obligation to keep and display it. With someone who has a full house, this backfires.
Choosing something from a hobby you don't know. Those who know a lot about something already have exactly the items they want. The chance that your choice is the wrong brand, size, or type is high.
Another set of something they already have four of. Towels, wine glasses, candlesticks: these are categories people already have too many of.
About budget: smaller is often better here
For a consumable gift, a low price is not a lack of effort; it's part of the format. A set of tealights for €7.95 with a well-thought-out card lands better than a decorative object for €40 that needs a place.
If you're giving something to someone who shouldn't see it immediately, the Yellow Treat Box with Handle 15x8x8 cm (€2.99) is handy: you carry it by the handle and the contents remain hidden until the last moment.
When to arrange this
For autumn birthdays, you can choose now. If you're working ahead for Sinterklaas and the holidays, September and October are the quiet time to order: stocks are widest then, and you have time to exchange if something isn't quite what you thought. When in doubt, buy two small gifts rather than one large one: the chance that at least one is a hit increases significantly.
