Window, magnetic closure or handle? Gift packaging set apart

A box with a window, a lid, a magnetic closure or a handle: each closure suits a different gift and a different way of presenting it. Here's how to choose the right one.
Two boxes of almost identical dimensions can behave completely differently. One stays shut and survives a bag, while the other opens as soon as you tilt it. The difference is almost never in the size, but in the closure: a lid, a magnet, a window, or a handle. Anyone handing over a gift notices that difference when it counts, and anyone sending a gift only notices it when it's unwrapped at the other end.
Below are the four types you'll encounter in practice, with what each type is good at and where it falls short.
First: Is the box going in the mail or not?
This is the question that determines all other choices. Gift packaging only needs to be pretty and open once. Shipping packaging, in addition, must survive a sorting center, withstand being stacked against other packages, and sometimes get wet.
Two routes work:
Gift box in a shipping box. Your nice box goes as a whole into a sturdier outer box, with padding in between. More work and more volume, but the recipient receives the packaging intact.
If you ship regularly, the second route is almost always the cheaper one - especially if you stay below a lower shipping size.
Box with a window: when it works
A window sells the gift before it's opened. This is pleasant at a stall, on a store shelf, and for anything where the contents themselves already look good: jewelry, a set, something with color.
Where a window falls short: when the surprise is the point, when the contents look messy without styling, or when the gift needs to arrive discreetly. A window, after all, shows what's inside, even to someone else who accepts the package.
Lid, magnetic closure, or simply folded shut
The closure determines how opening it feels and how well the box stays closed.
A loose lid is the classic: simple, inexpensive, and you can neatly place the gift inside. The disadvantage is that a loose lid can also come off if the box is tilted. Great for handing over, less great for carrying loosely in a bag.
A magnetic closure snaps shut and stays shut, even if the box is upright or upside down. That's exactly what you want for something you're taking to a birthday party. The white packaging box with magnetic closure 9.5 x 9 x 10 cm (€5.00) is more expensive per piece than a simple box, but it also looks and feels distinctly different — and it is often kept, which only adds to its value as a gift.
The folded cardboard box with flaps is the workhorse variant: strong, stackable, and suitable for shipping. The white cube gift box 12 x 12 x 12 cm (€2.99) is an example: enough volume for a mug or a set, and neat enough to put a ribbon around it directly.
Handle, cube, and other shapes
A handle changes the way a gift is given. The yellow treat box with handle 15 x 8 x 8 cm (€2.99) carries itself: handy at a market, for a treat, or if someone immediately walks away with it. In a shipping package, a handle is inconvenient, as it's a weak point that can tear.
A box that is too spacious is just as annoying as a box that is too tight. Anything that shifts will arrive crooked or damaged, and a rattling gift feels cheap.
Protective filling is for the journey. If the box is going in the mail, use a layer of bubble wrap (roll 500 mm x 500 m, €12.95) between the gift box and the outer box, not just inside it.
Rule of thumb: give the closed box a shake. If you hear or feel something moving, you need more filling.
