Throwing a party in a small apartment: space, noise, and cleanup

Fifteen people in a small living room calls for different choices than a party in a house with a garden. This is how you calculate your space, keep the noise under control, and have the clean-up station ready before the first guest arrives.

Fifteen people in a four-by-four-meter living room. The sofa is in the way, coats are piled on the bed, and at half-past midnight, the neighbor taps on the wall. A party in a small apartment is not the same as a party in a house with a garden — and it usually goes wrong in three areas: space, noise, and the mess afterward.

Now that evenings are getting shorter and birthdays and get-togethers are moving indoors, it's wise to plan for these three things in advance rather than during the event. Below is an approach that assumes limited square footage.

First calculate your space, then your guest list

A simple rule of thumb for a standing party: allow approximately half to three-quarters of a square meter of free floor space per person. Free floor space means: without sofas, tables, cabinets, and without the path to the kitchen and toilet. In a 20 m² living room, after furniture, there is often 10 to 12 m² left. This is comfortable for fifteen to twenty people standing, and for eight to ten people sitting.

If you know it will be tight, move furniture to one side or into the bedroom instead of leaving it in place. A low coffee table in the middle of the room is the biggest space hog and the main tripping hazard. Push it against the wall and use it as a drink table — it then immediately becomes a focal point that helps with traffic flow.

Consider beforehand where coats will go and where dirty glassware should be placed. These are two spots nobody designates in advance, and you'll be tripping over them all evening.

Decorations that go up instead of out

In a small space, decorations at table and floor height consume your movement space. Anything you hang from the ceiling or on the wall costs nothing.

If you want to hang garlands or lights without drilling holes in a rental property, self-adhesive hooks are the easiest route. A set of Self-adhesive Hooks 6x6cm - 10 Pieces costs €5.95. Two practical notes: stick them on a clean, smooth, dry surface, and hang them a day in advance. This way, you'll know if they hold before the party, rather than halfway through the evening.

Balloons make a big impact in a small space, but regular balloons visually disappear once the lights go out. The LED Balloons 5 pieces in yellow or multicolor cost €2.95 and remain visible even in dim light — useful if you want to turn off the main lights to make the room feel more spacious. For a table or windowsill, small accents work better than large pieces: Mini Decoration Hearts Acrylic - 20 pieces cost €2.00 and literally take up no space. A light object like the Grundig Infinity Mirror with 34 LEDs, 18x18x2 cm for €9.95 creates atmosphere without needing to hang anything.

A confetti cannon like the Heart Confetti Cannon 38 cm (€4.00) is fun for one moment, but be honest about the consequences: paper confetti in a high-pile carpet is nearly impossible to vacuum out. Do it outside, on the balcony, or over a smooth floor — or skip it altogether.

Glasses, cups, and the washing up you don't want to do

In a small home, washing up is the real problem, not serving. You don't have a second sink and no space to put dirty glassware.

Three approaches. Your own glassware is the most beautiful and cheapest in the long run, but requires space for dirty glasses AND a dishwasher or an hour's work. Reusable hard plastic cups are a middle ground: the Hard PVC Sports and Coffee Cup 500 ml costs €9.95, doesn't break, and lasts for years. Disposable is most practical for larger numbers: Coffee Cups 150ml - 100 Pieces cost €14.95 for a hundred, which comes down to about fifteen cents per cup.

If you're serving spirits, small glasses are handier than large ones: a Shot Glass Set of 6, 60 ml costs €3.00 and fits on any shelf. Count on about two to three glasses or cups per guest throughout the evening — not one, because people lose them.

A straw makes a glass recognizable, which significantly reduces the number of lost glasses. Flexible Colored Paper Straws 220 x 6 mm - 10 pieces cost €1.95 and can simply be thrown away afterward; the Multicolor Plastic Straws - 10 pieces cost €6.95 and are sturdier in thicker drinks. For tables or trays, Rainbow Placemats 32x42 cm (€8.95) keep rings and crumbs off your furniture.

Noise: the topic nobody thinks about until it goes wrong

In an apartment, noise is your biggest risk for trouble. Music travels through floors and walls, but it's primarily bass, stomping, and voices on the balcony that reach the neighbors.

What helps: don't place your speaker against a shared wall and not directly on the floor, but on a piece of furniture with something soft underneath. Turn the bass down a bit and the mid-range up slightly — this way, the music remains just as audible for you, while less gets through to the neighbors. Agree on a time for the music to be turned down, and stick to it; that's worth more than any apology afterward.

After a certain hour, don't let people talk on the balcony. Voices outside carry further at night than music inside. And the simplest thing: let your immediate neighbors know in advance. A brief heads-up with an end time prevents most complaints.

As the evening quiets down, a game works better than turning up the music. Mini Poker Playing Cards - 54 cards cost €1.95 and fit on a coffee table; the 99-in-1 Game Set with Dice and Checkers Board costs €14.95 and is a small box with many options. A bowl of snacks also keeps people seated rather than standing: a Popcorn Bowl costs €7.95.

Cleanup: arrange it beforehand, not at three in the morning

The difference between a fun party and an annoying Sunday lies in two things you set up before the first guest arrives.

One: a large, open bin or box for empty packaging, separate from general waste. An Action Moving Box measuring 480x430x330 mm (50 liters) costs €3.50, is sturdy enough for bottles and cans, and can be carried downstairs in one go afterward. Place it where people walk by, otherwise, it will end up on the kitchen table anyway.

Two: something to quickly wipe down surfaces before stains set in. A Surface Cleaner and Sanitizer 150 ml costs €3.95 and fits in a drawer. Wine and soda on wood or textile are manageable immediately afterward and much harder the next morning.

One last tip: on the night itself, only clean up liquids — empty glasses, bottles in the bin, dry wet spots. The rest can wait until tomorrow. This keeps the party fun and minimizes damage.

Getting started

For a party in a small space: less decoration at eye level, more on the ceiling; smaller glassware in larger quantities; and a designated clean-up spot ready before the first guest arrives.
