Cozy evenings at home without screens: the right games, dice, and atmosphere. A practical guide for friends' nights.

September feels like a fresh start: everyone is back from vacation, routines begin anew. It's the perfect time to create something at home that you won't get second-hand – cozy evenings with friends that you truly enjoy. That starts with good preparation and the right items on the table.

Why September is the perfect time

September is the month of fresh starts. Everyone has a bit more energy than in August, the first autumn vibes begin, and you're more likely to spend time with friends indoors rather than outside in nature. That makes it the perfect time to organize a "screen-free evening" – card games, dice, puzzles, things that truly demand attention.

Contrary to what many people think: these kinds of evenings don't have to be boring. You just need the right things and the right atmosphere.

What it's all about: choosing games

The choice of games determines everything. Are they cooperative games where everyone works together against the board? Or competitive games where you play against each other? Different rules apply to adults than to children – your guests need humor, some strategic depth, and games that don't last for hours.

Good preparation means: deciding which game you want to play a day in advance. Then you can go through the rules, and if it gets boring, you have an alternative ready. You don't need to buy ten games – three well-chosen ones are sufficient.

Dice and card games: the basics

Not every game has to be complicated. Simple dice – and yes, you can also use them humorously in drinking games – are cheap and multifunctional. A good collection of dice includes all sizes and colors. Large XXL dice are fun for table games, small ones for your hand. Card games are even simpler – a good deck of cards costs almost nothing and provides hours of fun.

The advantage: dice and cards are universal. They fit everywhere, they don't break if someone bumps into them, and they are ready for next time.

The atmosphere: lighting and food

Games are not everything. A cozy evening also revolves around what's on the table. Provide good lighting – not bright white office light, but something warmer. Candles help. Provide snacks and drinks – not too much, but attractively arranged on the table. People play better when they can eat and drink something.

Background music is not a must, but it helps. Something quiet, not distracting, so it doesn't feel overplayed.

Timing and preparation

Don't start your evening right away. Give people twenty minutes to arrive, drink coffee, catch up. Then start with a game that everyone quickly understands – not your most complicated game as an opener. Make sure the first game is shorter, so people get into the rhythm. After that, you can move on to something longer or more strategic.

Don't plan more than two to three games in an evening. Four hours is a good length – cozy, not tiring.

Practical checklist

  • Games: at least two, preferably three – variety in genre
  • Dice and game pieces: make sure you have all the complete parts
  • Cards: good playing cards (not worn-out ones from home)
  • Snacks: nuts, chips, fruit, something healthy and something less healthy
  • Drinks: water, beer, wine, tea – whatever your guests like
  • Lighting: provide candles or dimmable lamps
  • Table: large enough, clean, with enough space for games and glasses

Preventing "it's getting boring"

It gets boring if: everyone plays the same game (alternate), your guests don't know what to do (explain rules well before starting), or there's no atmosphere (provide light and some snacks). Prevention is better than cure.

Also: don't let everyone play the same role. Someone who has been the leader in games for three evenings in a row might want something different next time. Variation in who does what makes it fun.

Where to order and what does it cost?

A good home base can be set up cheaply. A set of dice and playing cards together won't cost you more than €25. Card games are often between €10 and €30. Board games vary, but many good games can be bought for €20 to €40. That's a one-time investment that you'll enjoy for years.
