Halloween is just around the corner. Learn how to quickly organize a fun party without spending a lot of money. Decorations, costumes, and drinks for a successful celebration.
Halloween is just around the corner, and your friends are looking at you because you said: 'we're throwing a party!' Now you have to quickly get a costume, hang decorations, and stock up in October. This article: what you really need and what you can skip entirely.
Costume: buy or DIY?
Start with yourself. Are you buying a complete Halloween costume (around €25 to €50) or mixing and matching from your closet? A black T-shirt, painted face, and you're a vampire. Much cheaper and easier. The same goes for guests: it doesn't have to be perfect. A black shirt, some fake blood (cheap makeup), and everyone will get it.
Does your party have a theme? Zombies, witches, skeletons, or just 'anything spooky'? Say so in advance, so guests can start sketching their costumes. That way, you won't run into €200 worth of purchases.
Decoration that works instantly
You don't need much. A few garlands with skeletons or spiders cost around €2 to €5. Put some tea lights in glasses on the table (cheap, safe, spooky). Buy some pumpkin-shaped decorative cards (around €10): these scream Halloween more than anything else. Are those garlands still in the cellar from last year? Hang them up.
For outside: if you have garden doors, hang a skeleton or spider decoration (around €5 to €15). No one expects a perfectly decorated garden, but your front door should make it clear: something's happening here. Nothing more needed.
Drinks and food: funny and practical
This is what your friends will laugh about. Penis straws (yes, really, around €8 for 10 pieces) fit perfectly in drinks and are funny without being weird. Stirring sticks with breast design (around €3) if you're making cocktails. A large glass with 'spider web' made of black tulle (cheap) over it and you have a punch bowl from a horror movie.
For food: chips, nuts, and maybe some candy corn or sweets (around €5). You don't have to bake yourself. Many friends will bring something.
Funny extras
If you want: hang fake spider webs (around €3) in the corners of your living room. Glow sticks (around €1 to €3) on your wrists. Put a fake skeleton in the corner (around €15 to €25). But this is a bonus, not a necessity. Your friends come for each other, not for perfection.
Timing: what to order now, what can wait
We are in September. Order now:
Costume (for yourself or persistent guests)
Decoration garlands and candles
Straws and stirring sticks
Sweets and snacks
This can wait until October 3rd:
Tea lights (available everywhere)
Makeup (drugstores, supermarkets)
Drinks and wine
What you really don't need
A polluting Halloween robot. A complete themed buffet (no one thinks about it). Fake blood in gallons (too funny, no one dares to touch it). Costumes for your pet (your cat already hates you).
Party essentials: quick checklist
You and your friends have costumes (or a plan for them)
Garlands and candles are hung (2 hours work)
Drinks and snacks at home
Funny straws and stirring sticks ready
Music on (Spotify Halloween playlists are free)
Makeup on the table for those who want it
More than this is not necessary. Your friends come to celebrate Halloween with you, not to look at your perfect party.
