Factual guide to intimate hygiene and care: pH, material compatibility, cleaning, and storage at a glance.
You can read about toys themselves almost everywhere, but surprisingly little about how to clean and care for them. Yet, it is precisely this care that determines how long everything lasts and how pleasant it remains to use. This guide, therefore, is not about the toys themselves, but about the care products surrounding them: wash gel, toy cleaner, lubricant, and how to store everything neatly. Sober and factual, so you know what you are buying and why. This article is intended for adults and describes products without health or medical claims; if you are unsure about your own situation, please consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Intimate hygiene: why pH matters
Regular soap is alkaline and can disrupt the natural balance of sensitive skin. Products specifically made for the intimate area are therefore usually pH-neutral or mildly formulated. This is stated on the label, so you don't have to guess. An intimate wash gel of 400 ml, pH-neutral and suitable for daily use (€7.95) is an example of such a product: a large bottle that lasts a long time and focuses on mild cleansing rather than strong perfumes.
The rule of thumb is simple: for the intimate area, choose a product labeled as pH-neutral or mild, and use it sparingly. More product or scrubbing harder won't make it cleaner, and an unscented or lightly perfumed variant is often best for sensitive skin.
Keeping your toys clean
Toys should be cleaned before and after use. Water and mild soap go a long way, but a special cleaner is more convenient because it works quickly and leaves no residue. An unscented toy cleaner of 120 ml (€7.95) can be sprayed on, left to work briefly, and then wiped off or rinsed according to the toy's instructions for use.
Pay attention to the material
Not every material tolerates the same treatment. A few points of attention that appear on most packaging:
Silicone: easy to clean, but check if the toy can withstand warm water. Do not use silicone-based lubricant on silicone toys — more on that below.
Hard plastic (ABS): sturdy and easy to wipe clean; do not submerge if it contains electronics.
Electric toys: never fully submerge unless explicitly permitted. Wipe them with a cloth and toy cleaner.
Always follow the instructions that come with the toy itself; these take precedence over any general rule.
Lubricant and material compatibility
Lubricant strictly speaking falls outside "hygiene", but the choice of material is directly related to it. The most important factual rule: silicone-based lubricant can damage silicone toys. Therefore, combine a silicone toy with a water-based lubricant. A neutral water-based lubricant of 100 ml (€10.00) is a safe standard choice for this and is also easy to rinse off.
If you want a large supply of small portions, for example, to give away or use individually, then the glass jar with 50 sachets of silicone-based lubricant (€80.00) is practical — but then keep in mind which toy material it is compatible with.

Care and storage
In addition to cleaning, care is also important, especially during the heating season when skin dries out more quickly. A neutral, skin-friendly oil can help with this. Coconut massage oil of 250 ml (€14.95) is an example of a nourishing oil for massage. Please note: oil and latex (such as condoms) do not mix — oil can damage latex. Therefore, do not use oil in combination with latex products.
For storing your toys: keep them dry and separate. Only store them when they are completely dry, and keep materials that can react with each other (such as different types of silicone) apart. Empty bottles of 100 ml, 16 pieces (€19.95) are useful for pouring larger bottles of lubricant or oil into smaller portions, for example, for a drawer or travel bag. If you also want to completely relax, a satin eye mask (€2.95) is a neutral, affordable extra.
A quick checklist
Clean toys before and after use according to the included instructions.
Choose water-based lubricant for silicone toys.
Do not use oil in combination with latex.
Let everything dry completely before storing.
Store dry, separately, and out of direct sunlight.
Discreetly packaged and affordably portioned
For those who prefer small portions or want to take something on a trip, refillable bottles are handy. You pour a larger bottle of wash gel or massage oil into smaller bottles and keep the large bottle at home. This prevents leakage in your bag and allows you to use the large supply more slowly. Also practical: label your bottles clearly, especially if the content looks similar to other personal care products in your toiletry bag.
Get started
Good care is primarily a matter of the right products and a regular routine: pH-neutral cleaning, the right lubricant for the right material, and storing everything dry.
