Practical guide for a pleasant and safe candle-burning experience at home — from the first burn to burn time and surface.

As the days get shorter, candles reappear on our tables. Usually, all goes well. But sometimes not: a dripping candle that strips paint from your candlestick, a tealight that melts through its holder, or a wick that slumps to one side, causing uneven wax consumption. Almost all these problems can be prevented with five minutes of attention before you light it. This isn't a mock fire safety course – it's a short, practical guide for people who enjoy candles at home and want to make them last as long as possible.

First, choose the candle, then the spot

Candles come in three main forms: tealights (small, short, in an aluminum or transparent cup), pillar candles (thicker, freestanding), and dinner candles (long and slender, in a holder). Each type requires its own surface.

  • Tealights should always be placed in a glass, metal, or ceramic holder – never directly on a wooden table. They burn for 3-4 hours, become liquid at the bottom, and can leave a burn mark without a holder.
  • Pillar candles should be placed on a flat, heat-resistant surface. A tile, a glass coaster, or a ceramic dish works well. Always place something under a dripping pillar candle from which you can scrape off solidified wax.
  • Dinner candles fit into classic candlesticks. Check if it stands steadily before lighting; tilted candles drip unevenly and are more likely to fall over.

A metal tray with magnetic candle holders (25×25 cm) (€20.00) is useful if you want to group several candles: one surface, no loose holders that shift. For a single spot, a mirror glass tealight holder (€19.95) looks beautiful – the glass captures the heat and spreads the light.

The first time: let it burn long enough

A new pillar candle needs one burning session to form its own "memory." Light it and let it burn until the wax at the top is completely liquid, reaching the edge of the candle. For a medium-sized pillar candle, this takes one to two hours. If you don't do this, it will only burn down the middle in subsequent sessions, leaving a thick rim of untouched wax – a waste of the candle.

This is less of an issue with tealights, as they burn up all at once. It's also hardly a concern for dinner candles, which naturally burn in a narrow way.

The wick: keep it short, keep it straight

A wick that is too long creates a large flame, soot, and uneven burning. Just before lighting, trim it to about 5 mm – with scissors or a special wick trimmer. Then straighten it. Soot on the glass of a holder almost always means: wick too long, or a draft in the room.

Is the flame flickering? Move the candle out of the draft. Candle flames that flicker back and forth do not burn completely and deposit soot.

What not to do

  1. Do not blow out candles if you are bothered by smoke. Use a snuffer or briefly press the wick into the liquid wax with the back of a spoon and then lift it back up – it will light right away next time.
  2. Never leave burning candles unattended. Not even for "just five minutes." Extinguish the candle before leaving the room.
  3. No drafts above burning candles. Ventilate before or after, not during.
  4. Do not place near curtains, hanging decorations, or newspapers. Keep at least 30 cm clear on all sides.
  5. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Especially a cat can knock over a dinner candle with a flick of its tail before you know it.

How long does a candle burn?

General guidelines if you know how much you need for an evening or a weekend:

Candle type Average burn time When to stock up
Tealight 3 – 4 hours If you want ambiance for several evenings in a row.
Medium pillar candle 15 – 30 hours For a longer period, several weeks.
Dinner candle (standard) 6 – 8 hours For a 4-hour dinner, count on one, with a spare.
Large scented candle in glass 25 – 50 hours For autumn and winter combined.

For a dinner with eight guests, averaging three hours at the table: count on two dinner candles (one always burns out). For a long movie night with four tealights on the coffee table: take six, so you can replenish halfway through.

Scented candles and tealights for ambiance

Scented candles do two things at once: light and fragrance. Choose a scent that suits the room – sweet scents in a large living room, fresher ones in a small space, otherwise it quickly becomes too much. The Chupa Chups scented candles Strawberry & Cream (10 tealights) (€7.95) or the Cherry variant (€7.95) are handy multipacks for placing a set on the table each evening.

Without scent, just lots of light: the Blunt candle set of 6 (€7.95) is an economical stack to get through autumn. For Pride or themed groups, there's the rainbow candle set of 6 (€7.95).

What to place under your candles

A candle without a base is the main preventable reason for damage to a table or nightstand. What works:

  • A glass or ceramic holder that is larger than the candle itself.
  • A metal tray for multiple candles together.
  • A heat-resistant coaster (cork doesn't work – it scorches).
  • For pillar candles: a plate or flat dish from which dripping wax can easily be removed.

Wax dripped on a table? Let it harden completely, press an ice cube in a bag onto it for 30 seconds, then carefully scrape with a plastic card or thin knife. A warm iron over a sheet of paper towel works on textiles, but not on all fabrics – test on an inconspicuous spot first.

Storing between seasons

Candles left on a windowsill in summer will fade or sag. Store them in a cool, dark place in their original box or in a simple cardboard box of 15×10×4 cm (€1.99) – no sunlight, no radiator nearby. This way, in November, you'll unbox a set that still looks brand new.

Order in time for the darker months

Between October and January, candles are often the first item to sell out in many stores. If you know you want to continue using them until January, order a basic supply of tealights and pillar candles now.
