Dressing up a country-themed event or supporters' night is about calculating per guest, not per product category. A concrete price list, an example calculation for 20 people, and what you'd better skip.

You've got the theme — Germany, France, Belgium, or just orange — and then comes the question where things usually go wrong: how much do you order? Too little, and you'll have five costumed people among thirty spectators. Too much, and you'll be left with a box that's still in the closet next year, with crumpled headbands and dried-up face paint sticks.

The solution is simple: calculate per guest instead of per product category. Below is how that works, including prices from our assortment, so you know the total amount before you check out.

Split your list into "per guest" and "one-time"

Everything you buy falls into two categories. The first category contains what everyone gets: a wristband, a headband, a stripe of face paint. The second category contains what you buy once and that stays up or displayed all evening: flags on the wall, a game on the table, a bottle opener behind the bar.

This split determines your budget. You multiply the first category by your number of guests; the second is a fixed amount, whether you have ten or fifty people. If you mix these two up, you almost always order too much of the wrong thing.

Choose one item per guest, not three

One recognizable accessory per person works better than three half ones. People put on one item and leave the rest on the table. Three price ranges to choose from:

Price range Example Price Suitable for
Under a euro Wristband in national colors € 0.95 Large groups, giveaway at the door
Around two euros Plush headband with bow tie € 1.99 Visible in photos, stays on all evening
Around five euros Felt cowboy hat, headwear € 4.95 Smaller groups, or only for the party hosts

In the cheapest category, you'll find the Belgian/German Flag Wristband, the French Flag Wristband, and the Hawaii Headband French and Dutch Flag, all € 0.95. For twenty guests, that costs € 19.00 — less than one round of drinks.

If you want something that will show up in photos, the second category is the better choice. The Plush Headband with Bow Tie in German Flag Design and the Headband and Bow Tie Plush French Colors 25 cm both cost € 1.99. The Plush Rabbit Headband Tiara German Flag is in the same price range.

Reserve the most expensive category for a smaller group: the Cowboy Hat Felt German Flag One Size with Cord and the Cowboy Hat Felt French Flag with Cord are € 4.95 in the webshop, as are the German Police Cap and the Police Cap Neon Orange.

What you buy once for the venue

On the wall

Two or three large flags do more for a room than twenty small ones. The Belgian and German Flag 60x90 cm costs € 4.95, as does the Flag France 30 x 40 cm. Smaller items such as the Mini Flag Germany 15 x 10 cm and the Mini German Flags (both € 4.95) are meant for the table, the bar, or among the snacks — not to fill a wall.

Always check the product description for flags for the fastening. A flag with metal eyelets can be hung with zip ties or rope; a flag without eyelets needs adhesive hooks or clamps. That's the kind of detail you don't want to be solving on the day itself.

Sound and hands

At a sports night, the cheapest purchases are often the most fun. The Inflatable Cheering Stick France & Netherlands 60 cm and the Inflatable Cheering Stick Belgium and Germany 60 cm cost € 1.95. They take up a lot of space when inflated and almost nothing when flat — handy if you want to store them afterwards.

A bit sturdier are the Hand Clappers German & Belgian Flag and the Hand Clappers French and Dutch Flag, both € 4.95. Here, pay close attention to the packaging unit in the description before determining your quantity: for these types of items, whether you buy a single piece or a set varies by product.

Face paint: fun, but with a few rules

The French or Dutch Flag Red White Blue Face Paint and the German / Belgian Flag Black Red Yellow Face Paint cost € 4.95 each and are the cheapest way to get a whole group in the colors. Three practical points:

  • Count on one stick per eight to ten guests. More is a waste, because an opened stick lying in a drawer for a year will not be used again.
  • Put make-up remover or wipes nearby. Without something to remove it, half of your guests will still be wearing it at the end of the evening — and that's not always the intention.
  • If in doubt, ask. Some people react to cosmetics; always make face painting voluntary and keep the packaging handy so the ingredient list remains legible.

A calculation example for twenty guests

Imagine: twenty people, Germany theme, an evening in a clubhouse. Here's what a complete list looks like.

Item Quantity Price Total
Plush headband with bow tie 20 € 1.99 € 39.80
Wristband in national colors 20 € 0.95 € 19.00
Flag 60x90 cm 3 € 4.95 € 14.85
Face paint stick 2 € 4.95 € 9.90
Inflatable cheering stick 6 € 1.95 € 11.70

That comes out to € 95.25, or just under five euros per guest. If you want to spend less, drop the headbands and keep only the wristbands: you'll be around € 55 for the same group.

What you're better off skipping

A few categories rarely deliver what they cost. One-size clothing, for example: the German Flag Hawaii Skirt (€ 4.95) and the Orange Hawaii Skirt 45 cm (€ 4.95) work fine for those who choose them themselves, but don't buy them blindly for an entire group. The same applies to the German Flag Suspenders (€ 4.95) and the Mohawk Iroquois Wig (€ 4.95): fun for three people, a waste of money for twenty.

Car accessories are a separate category. The Car Mirror Cover German Flag and the Car Mirror Cover Flag Finland (€ 4.95) and the German Flag for Car 30x45 cm (€ 7.95) are for the drivers in the company, not for the room. Order them separately and only for those who ask for them.

Ordering and storing

Order at least two weeks in advance, and add five to ten percent to your guest count for last-minute additions and broken items. For wristbands and headbands around a euro, this is a negligible amount; for headwear costing five euros, calculate more precisely.

What's left over is usually fine to store if you sort it immediately: hard items like caps and bottle openers in a box, textiles flat in a large zip-lock bag to prevent creasing, and face paint in a separate container — it attracts moisture. The Bottle Opener France Metal 13.5 cm (€ 4.95) and the Eddy Toys Jeu Du Boule Set 7 Pieces (€ 9.95) last for years and are worth putting away separately.

Get started

First choose your quantity, then one accessory per guest, and only then the decorations for the room. In the Countries collection, you'll find the flags, headbands, and face paint from this article together; for garlands and banners, look in Flags & Garlands, and for the rest of the decorations in Party & Dress Up.
