Oil, gel or powder, 100 or 250 ml, coconut or eucalyptus: a sober comparison of massage products, including consumption, storage and what oil does to textiles and latex.
A 100-milliliter bottle of massage oil sounds like a lot. In practice, you'll go through it in two back massages, especially if you start too generously. And anyone who works without a towel the first time will later discover that vegetable oil stains cotton. This article lists what's available, how long a bottle lasts, and what practical matters to arrange beforehand.
Oil, gel, or powder: three types with different behaviors
Oil glides the longest and is therefore pleasant for a longer massage over larger areas: back, shoulders, legs. Disadvantage: it absorbs into fabric and needs to be washed out with detergent.
Gel is thicker on the skin, stays in place better, and is easier to rinse off. Handy if you're working on a couch or in bed and don't want to think about cleaning up.
As a rule of thumb, for a twenty-minute back and shoulder massage, you'll use roughly 10 to 20 milliliters, depending on how dry the skin is and how much you reapply. Calculate for yourself:
Opening a screw cap with oily hands is inconvenient. A squeeze bottle or pump saves hassle and spills. Therefore, the same coconut oil comes in a 100 ml squeeze bottle and a 100 ml version with a dispenser, both €9.95. If you buy a large bottle, you can pour small portions into a set of 16 empty 100 ml bottles (€19.95) — handy for on the go or to make a gift.
Scent: choose based on what you'll still smell afterwards
Scent lingers longer than the massage lasts: on your hands, on the towel, in the pillow. Three popular choices:
Coconut is sweet and rich; the most chosen scent and usually a safe choice if you're buying for two people. For example, coconut in 250 ml — €14.95.
Almond is softer and more neutral, pleasant if strong scents quickly become too much: almond 250 ml — €14.95, or 100 ml — €9.95.
Eucalyptus is fresh and herbaceous and stands out clearly. Available in 250 ml (€14.95) and 100 ml (€9.95). If you want to sleep soundly in the evening, this is not the most obvious choice.
If you're buying for someone else, it's better to ask which scents they dislike. That provides more useful information than asking what they like.
Skin, warming products, and common sense
Products that give a warming sensation, such as the aforementioned Hot Cream lotion, feel stronger than a regular oil. Always try them on a small patch of skin, for example on your forearm, and wait to see how it feels before applying to an entire back. The same applies to any new product for people with sensitive skin.
Massage oil is a care product, not a treatment. For complaints about muscles, joints, or skin, a general practitioner or physiotherapist is the right address — not a bottle from the webshop. Also avoid affected or damaged skin and the immediate eye area.
Combining with condoms, toys, and sheets
Three practical considerations:
Condoms. The condom packaging states which products can and cannot be combined with them. Read that before use; if you want to be sure, choose a separate water-based product for intimate moments, such as classic neutral lubricant, 100 ml (€10.00), and keep massage oil for your back and legs.
Toys. Rinse used materials afterwards and clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions. A 120 ml unscented toy cleaner costs €7.95.
Textiles. Place an old towel or bath sheet underneath. Oil in bedding requires washing at the highest permissible temperature for the fabric, and stains left behind will turn yellow over time. A gel or mixed powder is more forgiving than oil in this regard.
Storage and shelf life
Store bottles upright, in the dark, and at room temperature; not on the windowsill. Check the label for the symbol with an open jar and a number — this indicates how many months a product remains usable after opening. If an oil smells rancid or sharp, discard it instead of trying it again. Powder remains good the longest when unopened, making it a logical choice if you only massage a few times a year.
Finally, a small detail that makes a surprising difference: a satin eye mask for €2.95 ensures that the person lying on their stomach isn't looking into the light. Also nice to give as a gift with a bottle — just like the pearl necklace with 30 ml massage oil (€14.95).
