Movember: how to organize a mustache campaign at your business, club, or office

A Movember (moustache-growing) campaign stands or falls with the preparations made in October. What you document, which decorations and collection boxes you get, and how you conclude with a prize table.
At the end of October, many companies, associations, and shops face the same question: are we doing something for Movember this year? Usually, it's just a group chat and three colleagues growing moustaches. That's a shame, because with an afternoon of preparation, you can create an event that the whole team participates in — and where at the end, it's clear how much has been raised. Movember is an international action month in November where participants grow a moustache and raise money for men's health; official registration, conditions, and goals can be found at movember.com. This article covers the practical part: what to arrange, what to get, and how to conclude it properly.
What to establish in October
Four decisions determine success. One: where is the money going? Choose a goal and write it down, so you can explain where every euro ends up. Two: who participates and how? Growing a moustache isn't for everyone — agree that participation can also be with a fake moustache, a pin, or a task. Three: how do you collect? Online via a campaign page, cash in a jar on the counter, or both. Four: when do you finish? Set a date and time for the closing get-together in your calendar now; without a deadline, a campaign collapses halfway through the month.
Write those four answers on one A4 sheet and hang it where people get coffee. A simple participant list with a pen next to it works better than a form you have to open: a set of Topwrite Ballpoint Pens - Set of 10 (€ 2.00) costs almost nothing, and you're guaranteed to lose a few. For the board itself, Permanent Markers 5 Pieces 3 Colours (€ 4.95) are handy: thick enough to be readable from the hallway.
Participating without a moustache: effective props
The funny thing about a moustache campaign is that visibility does half the work. Anyone with a moustache gets asked "why?", and that's exactly the moment to share something. For everyone who cannot or does not want to grow a moustache, a fake moustache does the same job: the Fake Moustache Set 6 pieces - 3 models (€ 5.00) is meant to be distributed, so with a few sets, you can get an entire department or team in a photo.
If you want participants to be identifiable all month, a small pin is more practical than a moustache you lose in the morning. A metal pin like the Four-Leaf Clover Pin Metal - 2.5 cm (€ 7.95) stays on a jacket or bag and simply goes on to the next event after November. For a larger group, for example at a sports club, the Rainbow Silicone Wristbands - Set of 6 (€ 4.95) are a cheaper way to see at a glance who is participating. Look for more variations in the Pins & Badges collection.
Collecting money without hassle
Cash disappears if it's in an envelope under the till. Put something there that can close and stands out. A Piggy Bank Euro Motif 17 cm (€ 17.95) stands firmly on a counter; if you want to place several — at the till, in the canteen, and in the workshop — then the Small Piggy Bank Euro Motif 12cm (€ 15.95) is more compact. For a central jar where everything comes together, the Large Piggy Bank € Banknote 18.5cm (€ 19.95) is a logical choice.
Three agreements keep things clear. Count at fixed times, for example every Friday, and write the amount on the board. Have two people count together, which avoids arguments. And note what comes in per source: then at the end, you'll see if the jar at the till yielded more than the online page, and you'll know where to focus next year.
The end moment is where most of the revenue is generated, because people are gathered together then. Keep it simple: half an hour, a quick tally, and a few prizes that cost nothing but will be photographed. A Golden Award Trophy - 15x5 cm (€ 12.95) for the best-groomed moustache always works, and with a Rosette 2nd Place - Ribbon Button (€ 0.95) and a Rosette 3rd Place - Ribbon and Button (€ 0.95), you have a complete podium for less than two euros.
If part of your team works from home or at another location, send them their supplies. A fake moustache, a pin, and a note with the rules fit together in a letterbox package, and then the barrier to participation is removed. Check Letterbox Packaging for a box that fits through the letterbox and use Tape Rolls 6 Pieces 48x66mm (€ 21.00) to seal them all in one go. If you send more than ten packages, plan one packing moment instead of a few every day: that easily saves an hour.
The plan in brief
Mid-October: establish goal, participants, collection method, and end date.
End of October: get fake moustaches, pins, piggy banks, and pens; send packages to remote participants.
November 1st: take a start photo with the whole group — you'll use it for the rest of the month.
Every Friday: count, write the amount on the board, short update in the group chat.
End of November: get-together, award prizes, share final amount and note what you'll do differently next year.
Everything in one order
The practical part of such a campaign is small and inexpensive: a few sets of fake moustaches, pins, a piggy bank, pens, and some prizes. You can find them in Party Supplies, Pins & Badges, and Office Supplies; the shipping material for remote participants is in Packaging & Shipping. Are you organizing a campaign for a larger group and want to know if something is in stock in sufficient quantities? Send an email to info@verpakkingdeals.nl, and we'll find out for you before November begins.
