October brings Halloween, Oktoberfest, and bachelor/bachelorette parties. Discover what you really need and how to co-buy smartly.

October is just around the corner, and with it come three types of parties you definitely don't want to be unprepared for: Halloween, Oktoberfest, and of course, the bachelor/bachelorette parties that kick into full swing in autumn. Each party has different requirements, but the beauty is: many items can be reused. We've listed what you truly need – and what you can better skip.

What makes October the party month?

October is a peculiar season for parties. In one corner, you have Halloween fans enthusiastically hanging decorations and picking out costumes. In the other corner, Oktoberfest parties begin – from office-themed parties to actual beer festivals – and meanwhile, bachelor/bachelorette parties roll on as stepping stones to marriage. This means: you have the same audience for different types of parties. Your mask from last week suddenly becomes your accessory for next week.

Halloween: more than just scares

Halloween doesn't have to be dark and scary. For many adults, it's simply an excuse to do something different, put on a costume, and have a fun evening. That starts with the right mask. A luxury cat mask (€10.00) is refined enough for those who don't want a scary mask but still want to add some personality to their face. For those who really want something different: a funny pumpkin pin (€7.95) on your jacket says enough without having to dress up completely.

If you're inviting guests, the small things immediately start to add up. Costume nose masks (€4.95) are the ideal guest gift – cheap, funny, and anyone can wear them. They don't take up space in your shipping box if you send them along as an extra.

Oktoberfest: from theme party to real beer fun

Oktoberfest is, of course, a little bit over in October, but the theme parties continue into November. For those who want to host an Oktoberfest party at home: a funny Bierpolizei cap (€4.95) immediately sets the mood. It's a blend of traditional and funny, and not everyone has to wear the same costume. Add some German flags and you have a complete theme without spending too much money.

The difference between Halloween and Oktoberfest is that Oktoberfest is about beers and conviviality, not about being scary. That makes it easier to set up in the office or with a group of friends.

Bachelor/bachelorette parties: everything at once

Bachelor/bachelorette parties actually combine everything: they have the element of dressing up, the element of drinks and fun, and they are more personal. Here, you can reuse much of what you bought for Halloween and Oktoberfest. A good party accessory collection includes penis straws (€7.95 for ten pieces) – funny, practical, and no one will bat an eye at a bachelor/bachelorette party. Male stripper picks (€7.95) cost almost nothing and immediately make any cake and snack set much funnier.

The checklist: what you definitely need

  • Masks: at least one for yourself, plus some small ones for guests
  • Small accessories: caps, tiaras, pins – they weigh nothing, cost almost nothing, and feel like you've made an effort
  • Consumable items: straws, picks, partly to brighten up the table, partly because they are genuinely funny
  • Flags and decorations: depends on the type of party you're hosting – Halloween or Oktoberfest – but one set of decorations can be used for multiple parties
  • Costume basics: you don't have to buy a complete outfit; a set of gloves or a cape is sometimes enough

The secret: avoiding duplicate purchases

October is expensive if you buy everything separately for each party. The secret is: many small items are multi-functional. A mask is just as suitable for Halloween as it is for a masquerade ball. Straws and picks work at any party. And funny accessories are never a waste – in fact, they are recognized year after year and simply belong in your party collection.

Note: buy small quantities. Three masks for ten guests is a waste; five total is enough. Straws in packs of ten are ideal – not too many, not too few.

Timing: what to order now?

October actually begins in September. If you want Halloween items next week, order this weekend. For Oktoberfest, you can wait until early October. Bachelor/bachelorette parties are often scheduled closer to the date – so order those things a few days in advance. Fortunately, small accessories are always in stock.
