Invisible under your outfit: boob tape, covers and stay-up stockings

A dress with a deep back, a thin top, or stockings that keep slipping down all evening: here's what works underneath an outfit. About boob tape, covers, silicone edges, and men's styles.
You've already picked out your outfit, and then the question arises: what goes underneath? With a low-back dress, a halter neck, or sheer fabric, regular lingerie immediately stands out. And with stockings, the problem is often the opposite: they fit perfectly when you put them on but slowly slide down two hours later. Both problems are solvable, but with different items.
Below, we list what works under an outfit, what to look for when buying, and how to apply it without hassle halfway through the evening.
When tape and covers replace a bra
Boob tape is a wide, stretchy tape that you apply to the skin instead of wearing a bra. You use it when a bra strap or clasp cannot be hidden: a backless dress, an asymmetrical top, a jumpsuit with open sides. Nipple covers are something different — they only cover and provide no support. What to expect from tape: it keeps fabric and skin in place and works invisibly under sheer fabrics. What not to expect: that it's more comfortable than a well-fitting bra. It works great for an evening, but for a whole day at the office, a bra is usually more comfortable.
How to apply tape
Work on clean, dry skin. Body lotion, oil, or shower gel residue are the main reasons tape comes loose.
Cut the strips before you start. Cutting with sticky hands is difficult.
Apply without pulling. Tape that you stretch tightly and then press down pulls on the skin and comes loose at the ends.
Round the corners. Sharp points are the first to curl.
Remove it gently. It's easier in the shower with warm water than dry and fast.
Do you have sensitive skin or are you using something like this for the first time? Stick a small piece on your forearm a day earlier and see how your skin reacts. Do not use tape on irritated or damaged skin.
Stockings that stay up: pay attention to the band
With thigh-high stockings, the difference lies almost entirely in the top band. A regular woven band slides on the skin; a band with silicone in it grips. Two practical points. Firstly: silicone bands work less well on lotioned legs — apply body lotion at a different time, not just before putting them on. Secondly: the heavier the fabric, the more the band has to bear. With thick stockings, the chance of them sliding down is greater than with fine ones.
Sizing: what "2 sizes" and "one size" come down to
Many stockings and tights are sold in two size groups, for example, S/M and L/XL. This classification mainly concerns leg length and circumference, not just dress size. Two rules of thumb help with selection:

Is only a product size mentioned and no size chart? Then measure your leg at the widest point and compare it with a stocking you already own. This is more accurate than guessing your clothing size.
Also for men: what fits under tight trousers

Washing and storing
Delicate stockings and lingerie are most quickly damaged in the washing machine, not during wear. Wash them on a low spin cycle in a laundry bag, or by hand in lukewarm water. No fabric softener: it damages elastic fibers. Let them dry flat instead of hanging them by the edge — the weight of wet textiles stretches the top band, and that band needs to maintain its grip.
Store stockings loosely rolled instead of tangled, and keep them away from rough Velcro or zippers. One snag in a drawer is enough for a run. Store boob tape closed and at room temperature; in a warm place, the adhesive becomes stickier and unrolls less easily.
Prepare a set for the next occasion
Anyone who regularly attends weddings, receptions, or parties benefits from having a small standard kit ready: a roll of tape with covers, one pair of stockings with a silicone band, and a spare in case something tears. This costs about twenty euros in total and saves searching on the evening itself.
