Ears, tiara, or headband: how to choose something that will stay put all evening

A tiara, ear set or headband is often the cheapest part of a fancy dress look and the first thing to come off. Here's how to choose a model that stays put, suits the occasion, and can be ordered for a whole group.
At the end of a party, take a look at the table by the bar. Chances are you'll find three ear sets, a tiara, and two headbands there. Not because they were ugly, but because they pinched, became lopsided, or fell to the floor the first time someone bent over. The cheapest part of a costume is also the part that most often gives out prematurely.
With party season approaching—Halloween at the end of October, the start of carnival season on November 11th, and all the theme parties and bachelor/bachelorette parties in between—now is the time to take a good look at them. Below, you'll find the different types available, what suits which occasion, and what to consider when ordering for more than one person.
Three types, three ways to wear them
Broadly speaking, hair accessories fall into three groups, and they are all worn differently.
The headband or tiara. A half-arch that clips behind your ears. Stays put as long as the tension is right, but after a few hours, it presses on those exact two spots.
The elastic headband. Goes around your head and distributes the pressure. More comfortable for long wear and works better with thick or slippery hair that a rigid headband might push out.
The loose clip or comb. Only stays in place if your hair provides grip. Ideal for an updo, useless for short or very sleek hair.
The simplest test is done at home, not at the party: put it on, bend over three times, and shake your head. If it stays on, it will survive the dance floor. If not, secure it with two invisible bobby pins on the inside of the band.
A single tiara for a few euros is tempting, but calculate what you're ultimately buying. If you end up ordering a mask and a tail separately for a single set, you'll spend more than on a three-piece set of €12.95 or €14.95, and the colors will be less coordinated.
If you're ordering for ten, twenty, or thirty people, keep three things in mind. To start, choose one type that everyone gets and one distinct piece for the person who is the focus; that's more recognizable than twenty different accessories mixed together. Then, account for a margin of about ten percent above your number, because someone extra always comes along, and something always breaks. Finally, choose models with elastic or a generous band, because these fit most heads without you having to ask for sizes.
Plush and feathers will fray if you just throw them loose in a bag. Store them flat in a box or a pouch, with the heaviest pieces at the bottom, and keep the loose parts of a set together. Metal headbands can be gently bent wider or narrower if they pinch or slide off, but do so in small steps, as a headband that has been over-bent once rarely returns to its original shape.
