How many glasses do you need, what will you put on the table, and how do you fill the hours until midnight? A practical setup for New Year's Eve at home, with numbers per group.

It's half past ten. Half of your guests are still at the table, the other half are in the kitchen, and someone asks if there's a clean glass left. That's the moment when New Year's Eve at home goes awry: not due to too little food or drink, but due to too few glasses, too little space, and a one-and-a-half-hour gap where no one knows what to do. An evening that lasts from eight o'clock until after midnight requires a different setup than a three-hour birthday party.

Start with the number, not the theme

For New Year's Eve, people arrive later and stay longer. Therefore, don't count on one glass per guest, but on three to four per person throughout the evening — that's what gets dirty, not what's on the table at the same time. If you don't want to wash dishes halfway through, buy extra: additional glassware, or a stack of disposable cups for the latter part of the evening. A box of 150ml coffee cups, 100 pieces (€14.95) is often more practical for coffee after midnight than your good mugs, especially if you don't know some of the guests.

For the midnight toast, small glassware works better than large. A set of 6 shot glasses, 60ml (€3.00) costs less than what you'd lose in spilled bubbly, and you'll need one set per six guests. Count on one extra reserve set: one always breaks.

A concrete calculation scheme:

Guests Total glasses/cups Shot glasses Straws
8 25 – 30 2 sets 10 – 20
15 45 – 60 3 sets 20 – 30
25 75 – 100 5 sets 40 – 50

Straws may seem like a detail, but they prevent knocked-over glasses on a crowded table. Paper straws 220 x 6 mm, 10 pieces cost €1.95; if you want something that will last all evening in a cold drink without getting soggy, then multicolor plastic straws, 10 pieces (€6.95) are the sturdier choice.

The hours before midnight: self-running games

Between dinner and the countdown is the trickiest part of the evening. What works: something you can put on the table that people can join or leave without disrupting the game. What doesn't work: a game with long explanations or fixed teams.

A card game is the most flexible for this. UNO Flex for 2 to 8 players (€6.99) can be picked up and put down. If you prefer something with stakes, then poker chips, 50 pieces in 6 colors (€9.95) are enough to keep a table of four to six people busy for an hour; with an automatic card shuffler for 1 to 2 decks (€12.95), the pace stays up. For groups with different ages, a 99-in-1 game set with dice, checkerboard, and score pad (€14.95) is more practical than three separate boxes: there's always something suitable. And if you want to get people off the couch, a ring toss game (€14.95) is enough reason.

The last half hour: counting down without chaos

At 11:30 PM, prepare what you'll need at midnight and put it in one place. Drinks poured on a tray, something to make noise with, and one person to keep an eye on the clock. That's all it is, but the difference between being prepared and not is huge: otherwise, you'll still be searching at five to twelve.

For the moment itself, 28cm confetti cannons with red petals (€6.95) are handy: they work indoors, don't stain, and you can lay them out on the table. Count one per two guests. For noise without fuss, whistle keychains, 5 pieces (€7.95) are a cheap alternative that people can simply take with them afterward. LED balloons, 5 pieces (€2.95) can be inflated an hour beforehand; they also provide light if you turn off the main lights.

A detail that turns out to be more fun than it sounds: serve coffee after midnight in something that matches the date. A ceramic mug with thermal effect and Happy New Year print, 470ml (€5.00) changes color as soon as something warm is poured into it. Four on the table are enough to make an impression.

Light, space, and the mess of January 1st

A long evening in a living room becomes especially pleasant with dimmer lighting and more walking space. Turn off large lamps and use small light sources at different heights. Tealights do this most cheaply: scented candles with 10 tealights (€7.95) or a mirror glass tealight holder, 19 x 10.8 x 12 cm (€19.95) on a table where no one walks by. Keep safety simple: candles on a non-flammable surface, away from garlands and curtains, and the last one to bed blows them out.

Before you start, prepare two things you'll be grateful for the next morning: an empty trash bag within reach and a bin or crate for empty bottles. Confetti is easier to clean up if you let it fall in one place — so fire the cannons over the table, not in the middle of the room.

What to order now

Most items for New Year's Eve are small, light, and easy to store, so you can easily include them in one order in November or early December. Glassware and cups can be found under Glasses, confetti and decorations under Party Supplies and Confetti Cannon / Party Popper, games for the hours before under Games, and everything for the table under Drink & Bar Accessories.
