A pin keeps a group visibly together, provided you consider quantity, closure, and stock in advance. This way, you order correctly in one go for an event, team, or themed evening.
A charity run, an open day, a themed evening at the club: the moment you want forty people to be recognizable, the question suddenly arises. Printing shirts takes time and money, wristbands break in the laundry, and a sticker on the chest falls off after half an hour. A pin is the smallest thing that keeps a group visibly together – provided you consider three things beforehand: the quantity, the fastening, and what it needs to stay attached to. Here's how to manage that without having to reorder halfway through.
First the quantity, then the design
Most miscalculations happen at the beginning. Don't calculate with "the number of participants," but with these three items:
Participants plus ten percent. Someone always shows up extra, and something always gets lost.
Volunteers, supervisors, and board members. You forget them on paper, and they are precisely the ones standing at the entrance all day.
A reserve for the table. Visitors will ask for them if they see them. Count on ten to twenty extra for an afternoon program.
If you're working with a fixed amount per person, it's useful to know that most metal pins in the assortment range between €4.00 and €9.95. For fifty people, this puts you roughly between €200 and €500 – a difference you want to know beforehand, not afterward.
Fastening: what is it attached to, and for how long?
Almost all pins have a pin with a clutch on the back. This works excellently on a lapel, a bag, or a cap, and less well on finely knitted sweaters and thin dresses, where the hole remains visible. Three practical choices:
On a jacket or bag – the standard choice for an outdoor event. The pin stays on when the jacket comes off, so remind people to take it with them.
A wristband for children and for short-term events. No sharp point, and it won't fall off. The Rainbow Silicone Wristbands, set of 6 cost €4.95 per set; for large groups, the pink party wristbands at €0.85 each are the cheapest solution per participant.
Choose based on occasion, not taste
The question is rarely "which pin is the prettiest," but "what does this represent." A few occasions on the calendar in the coming months, with what is currently in stock:
One thing to keep clear: buying a pin is a visible sign of support, not a donation. If you want to support a good cause, do so directly with the organization in question and use the pin for visibility.
One design or mixed?
For recognition during an event, one design for everyone is clearest: from a distance, you immediately see who belongs. For a goodie bag or a giveaway, a mix works better, as people then choose something themselves and are more likely to actually pin it on. A mixed selection can be built from individual designs, for example, the Metal Pin Watermelon (€7.95), the Metal Pin It Is What It Is (€7.95), and the Metal Pin Like 1 (€7.95).
When mixing, pay attention to the stock per design. Some pins have a hundred ready – for example, the Metal Pin Axolotl with Progress Pride Flag (€4.00) and the Rainbow Pride Pin Half-Round (€4.00) – while other designs have ten or twenty in stock. For a group of fifty, you consciously choose a design that can handle that stock, or you consciously split the group into two designs.
Distribute, present, and store
Four things that will make the day itself run smoother:
Pin them on a card or felt beforehand. Loose pins in a box become a tangled mess, and the clutches get lost. On a card, everyone can pick one themselves.
Place them at eye level at the entrance. If they're on a table at the back, no one will take one. A Transparent Acrylic Step Display with 6 steps (€34.95) or the 6-layer variant (€29.95) also works well for small items next to the cash register.
Collect the reserves in one place afterward. What you have left can be used the following year; by storing them in a closed box, you prevent the clutches from disappearing.
Are you reselling them? A metal display holder (€17.95) keeps small items together and neat on a counter.
Order on time, and in one go
Pins are small and light: even eighty pieces fit together in one compact shipment. So it pays to do everything in one order instead of reordering a handful three times. Also, allow for a week's leeway: if a design unexpectedly runs out, you'll have time to choose an alternative instead of being without on the day itself.
