Choosing rainbow accessories: from a small pin to a complete cape

Not everyone wants to walk around in a cape, and not every occasion calls for a five-foot flag. Here's how to choose rainbow accessories that suit the day, the place, and your budget.
On October 11th, it's Coming Out Day, and at schools, clubs, and offices, the same question circulates: who wants to wear something, and what? One colleague gladly hangs a flag from the window, while another might only want something small on their lapel. This difference is precisely why one large order of rainbow items often goes half-unused. It's better to choose based on the level of visibility, and consider how it fits and if it's washable.
Small and subtle: pins, keychains, and wristbands
This category is for those who want to participate but don't want to be the center of attention. A pin on a jacket or bag is visible all day without needing to put anything extra on.
For pins, pay attention to the clasp on the back. A standard butterfly clutch will come loose in a bag; on a jacket you frequently take off, it will be a lost pin sooner or later. If you wear it on thin fabric, place something sturdy behind the fabric so the needle doesn't pull a hole.
Adjustable is the keyword here. A belt with a buckle and suspenders with clips fit almost everyone; a one-size knitted sock is less practical. If you're ordering for a group, choose items that are literally one size or adjustable, so you don't have to inventory sizes.
Going all out: cape, flags, and fans
For a parade, an open day, or a party, you want something that's legible from forty meters away.
For a school, club, or team, the question isn't which item is the most beautiful, but what it costs per person and what's left over if not everyone participates.
Setup
What you order
Approximately per person
Something small for everyone
Axolotl pin at € 4.00
€ 4.00
Something small, bought in larger quantities
Wristbands, set of 6 at € 4.95
approximately € 0.83
Waving during a parade
Flag set of 6 at € 17.95
approximately € 3.00
A few people at the front
Cape at € 12.95
€ 12.95
Sets are almost always more cost-effective per person than individual items, and they remain usable for a future occasion. Order slightly more than you think you need: on the day itself, people who initially said no always show up.
Material, washing, and storage
Textiles in bright colors will bleed the first few times, especially when wet. Wash socks, bandanas, and scarves separately or with similar colors the first time, and at a low temperature. Polyester flags can usually be hung out, but don't leave them hanging in direct sunlight for weeks on end—the red and purple stripes will fade first.
Metal pins are best stored with the pin secured in a small box or on a piece of felt, not loose in a drawer; the needles bend easily. Fold capes and flags along the same fold lines as they were delivered, so you don't have to iron them. And keep the whole set together: otherwise, next year you'll be looking for thirteen loose items.
Everything in one place
Whether you're looking for something small for a large group, or one striking item for a parade: the complete range is available in the PRIDE and Badges – PRIDE collections, and individual pins can also be found under Pin's & Badges.
