An apron with a wink: size, fabric, washing instructions, and print durability

A funny apron is a classic gift, but whether it actually gets worn depends on the fit, the fabric, and how the print holds up in the wash. A no-nonsense guide to sizing, care, and when a joke does or doesn't land.
There's a reason why novelty aprons are so often given as gifts and so rarely worn: the joke is understood in a second, and after that, the item is expected to endure years in a kitchen full of grease, sauce, and the washing machine. The difference between an apron that disappears into a drawer and one that hangs on the hook every Sunday lies in three things—whether it fits, whether it can withstand what you put it through, and whether the print survives washing.
Now that summer is over and people are cooking and baking indoors again, it's a logical time to choose one. For yourself, or as a gift for someone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen. Below is what you should check on a product page before ordering.
Size: it's about the neck strap, not clothing size
Most kitchen aprons are sold in one size. That works better than with clothing, because an apron doesn't need to close—it just needs to cover. Still, there are two points where it can go wrong.
The first is the neck strap. A fixed, non-adjustable strap will be too high for a tall person and in the way for a shorter person. If you can't see on the product page whether the strap is adjustable, assume it's fixed and consider the wearer's height. The second is the length of the waist ties. These need to go around the waist and be able to be tied at the front or back. For a wider build, short ties are the first problem you'll encounter.
If you're choosing an apron as a gift and aren't sure about the recipient's build, a simple model with generous ties is safer than a closely cut one. A simple funny kitchen apron in 2 models (€14.95) falls into that category: little frills, lots of coverage.
Fabric: what to measure it against
An apron will encounter grease splatters, red sauce, candle wax, and sometimes a glass of wine. The question isn't whether it will get stains, but how easily they come out. Pay attention to the material in the product description and find out if it's a woven fabric or a thin, smooth cloth.
Rules of thumb that hold true in practice:
Thicker weave protects better against splashes but dries slower.
Smooth, thin fabric allows grease to penetrate faster to the clothes underneath.
Dark colors hide stains; a light apron will look used after three times cooking.
Pockets are handier than they seem—for a dish towel, a phone, or a thermometer.
If you're barbecuing or cooking outdoors, choose a model you can confidently throw in the wash. The BBQ and kitchen apron in rainbow colors (€9.95) is an example: a regular apron with a clear statement, without additions that won't survive washing.
The print: the first thing to break down
For printed aprons, the print is almost always the weakest link. What you can do to keep it looking good for a long time:
Wash at a low temperature and choose a short program.
Turn the apron inside out before putting it in the drum.
Avoid the dryer; heat is the enemy of printing.
Never iron directly over the print—place a cloth between them or iron on the reverse side.
Always follow the washing label on the apron itself: that takes precedence over general advice. If there's no label, use a low temperature and test on a small corner before trying something new.
Aprons with a 3D element—a raised detail instead of a flat print—require extra attention, as the raised part can rub during washing. The kitchen apron with 3D print in 6 models (€19.95) and the Sex Machine apron with plush detail (€24.95) fall into this group. It's best to wash these by hand or in a laundry bag, and let them air dry.
When the joke works—and when it doesn't
The range of funny aprons goes from mild to explicit, and that difference determines whether the gift will actually be used. A useful distinction:
The bottom two categories are party items, not kitchen utensils. An inflatable penis apron (€24.95) is meant for one evening and then goes into the closet—that's fine, as long as you don't give it to someone who expected something for the stove. If you want the apron to actually be used, stick to the top three rows.
If you're unsure about the recipient's taste, the milder models are the safer choice: the stripper print apron (€14.95) and the hospital boy and hospital girl variants (€14.95) are in between: clearly a joke, but not explicit.
If you give it as a gift
An apron is light and flat, which makes packaging easy. Folded, it fits in a small gift box or a letterbox package, which is convenient if it's being sent to someone else. Two things to remember: don't remove the original packaging if it contains size information, and mention what the washing label says—an apron that doesn't survive the first wash because it went to 60 degrees is a waste of your gift.
If you're giving it to someone who has just started cooking or just moved out, an apron works well in combination with one practical kitchen item. A joke alone is a joke; a joke plus something useful is a gift.
