What makes a keyring suitable as a gift, giveaway or point-of-sale item? About closures, weight, quantities and presentation, with concrete examples and prices.
A keychain is one of those products that nobody puts on a wish list, yet it sells all year round. At the checkout, in a goodie bag, as a thank you with an order, or simply because someone has a second set of keys and can't tell them apart. Precisely because the purchase is rarely planned, the execution matters: a keychain that falls off the ring after three weeks is more expensive than one that cost two euros more.
First, the question: what is it for?
There are three very different uses under the same product group, and they place different demands.
For yourself or a single gift. Here, it's important that the item holds up daily: sturdy ring, low weight, no sharp edges that will tear your pocket.
As a small gift or token of appreciation. Something with a message or a joke works better than something neutral. Sets of two are popular here because you can each keep one.
For distribution or sale. Then it's about unit price, quantity, and whether the whole thing looks like an assortment on the counter rather than a bin of loose items.
The clasp is the part that breaks
Almost all complaints about keychains are not about the charm itself but about the connection: a split ring that stretches out, a carabiner with a weak spring, or a link that opens under weight. Look at the product photo to see how the charm is attached to the ring. A double split ring made of thick metal is the most predictable. A thin chain between the charm and the ring looks neater but is the first part to fail if the keyring often falls to the ground.
With plush or silicone models, the weak point is where the loop attaches to the figure. This is usually not a problem for a gift but is something to be aware of if it's going to be attached to a bike key that goes in and out of a bag daily.
Larger plush or gadget models — like the Chicken Stress Ball Keychain (€7.95) or the Laying Hen Keychain (€9.95) — are more often attached to a bag or backpack than to a set of keys in practice. This is not a drawback, but it does determine who you offer them to.
A separate category is Bluetooth trackers. They hang on the same ring but solve a different problem: finding lost keys. Our range includes the Smart Finder Key Tracker and the white version, both €14.95. Please note that such trackers require an app and a battery; as a gift for someone who isn't familiar with them, this can often be disappointing.
If you want to give away keychains at an event or place them on the counter, the calculation shifts to unit price. A display box is then more efficient than loose items: the Keychain Display with 10 pieces costs €2.00 and is available in large quantities, making it suitable as a giveaway or an impulse item at the checkout.
Presentation does more than you'd think. A metal display holder for keychains (€17.95) places items at eye level instead of in a basket, transforming loose stock into a visible assortment. For small items on the counter, a 6-tier acrylic step display (€29.95) also works well.
You can find the full range in the Keychains collection.
