Bar, lollipop, gummy or freeze-dried? The candy aisle explained for treats and prize tables

Chocolate bars, lollipops, gummies, popcorn or freeze-dried fruit: each candy behaves differently in a bag, on a prize table or at the door. This is how you choose per occasion and calculate the price per piece.

You've bought a bag of candy for a treat, and half of it comes back untouched. Or worse: it's been in a warm bag all afternoon, and you're handing out sticky lumps. That's rarely due to the taste. It's about the type – because a chocolate bar, a hard lollipop, and a gummy behave totally differently once they leave the store.

In the coming weeks, occasions will pile up: treats at school and the office, prize tables at raffles and club nights, door-to-door on October 31st, and then the first packages. For each of these, a different type of candy is the logical choice. This article compares the types, their costs, and where they fall short.

Chocolate: most eaten, least travel-proof

Bars are the safest choice taste-wise. Almost everyone eats them, and you recognize the brand from a distance, which counts at a prize table. The downside is well-known: chocolate softens in a warm room or a closed car, and after cooling, you see a white film on the bar.

For distribution, you buy them in multipacks, as you then immediately know what one piece costs:

Multipack Contents Price Approx. per piece
TWIX 10-pack 10 bars, 500 grams from € 7.95 ± € 0.80
Mars 10-pack 10 bars, 450 grams from € 7.95 ± € 0.80
Nestlé LION XXL 10-pack 10 bars, 420 grams from € 7.95 ± € 0.80
Nestlé Bros 10 x 18 grams from € 6.95 ± € 0.70

The smaller 18-gram bars are interesting if you expect many people and no one needs a full meal — at the door, in a goodie bag, or as a thank-you at a stall. Store them cool and dark, and only put them on the table when guests arrive.

Lollipops: clean, slow, and easy to count

A lollipop on a stick is almost always more practical for handing out than loose candy. Hands stay clean, you can offer it in a hand or a small container without anyone rummaging through the bag, and you can see at a glance how many are left.

If you're giving away or selling many, individual pieces won't do. There are ready-made display boxes that you can place directly on a table or counter: the Becky's marshmallow lollipop display (from € 70.00) and the heart-shaped lollipop display box (from € 80.00). Before ordering, calculate the cost per piece and compare it with the individual price – a display is only worthwhile if you actually get rid of the whole box.

Gummy and popcorn: the intermediate category

Gummies are most loved by children and the trickiest to handle: they stick together as soon as it gets warm, and they are difficult to distribute fairly without counting them. A 201-gram gummy fast food mix (from € 5.00) therefore works better in a bowl on a table than as candy to hand out from a bag.

Popcorn falls in between. Jimmy's Popcorn Sweet, 100 grams (from € 4.95) is light, filling quickly, and cheap per portion – ideal for a movie night or as a filler for a candy corner. However, once opened, it only stays crispy for a short time, so buy according to need rather than discount.

Freeze-dried: the newest category on the shelf

Freeze-dried fruit has moved from health food stores to candy shelves in recent years. Moisture is extracted from the product, making it airy and crispy, and its volume increases significantly: you visually get a lot for little weight.

Two practical caveats. It doesn't melt and doesn't stick, so it survives a bag better than chocolate. But it is sensitive to moisture: as soon as the packaging is opened and left out, the crispness disappears. Distribute it in small portions rather than from one large bag, and immediately reseal the packaging.

When a machine is handier than a bowl

If the candy is out all evening or all weekend – at a club night, in a waiting room, at a stall – then a bowl is an invitation to grab a handful. A gumball machine dispenses one ball at a time and also serves as a decoration. The red gumball machine (from € 14.95) and the blue mini gumball machine (from € 12.95) are compact enough for a counter or windowsill.

How much to order?

For distribution, count on one piece per person plus 20 percent reserve; for a freely accessible bowl, two to three pieces per person. Always choose two types instead of a large quantity of the same: there's almost always someone who doesn't like chocolate, and with a lollipop or freeze-dried fruit next to it, you've catered to that person too. For allergens and ingredients, check the packaging itself – that's the only information you can rely on.
