What you prepare in your bin beforehand for neat shipping from a pop-up, stall, or market — with actual boxes, tape, and void fill.
A pop-up shop in a vacant building, a stall at an autumn market, a day at a clubhouse or festival: you sell on the spot, and at the same time, questions arise like "can I have it shipped?", "will it fit in my bag?" or "can you send it after the market?". You don't want to be caught empty-handed. Shipping from a temporary location is different from shipping from your permanent packing station: you have less space, fewer tools, and you need to make choices before you leave. With a few fixed choices, you can keep things manageable.
What to pack in your box before you leave
First, determine which box sizes you need based on what you're selling. For small items — jewelry, pins, accessories — a letterbox package is often sufficient. For slightly larger items, use a compact shipping box. Take a stack of each size that matches what you expect to sell; you won't have time to improvise on the go.
Handy essentials to put in your shipping box:
Two box sizes that cover 80% of your sales.
One roll of tape and one manual dispenser.
Some void fill material — a strip of bubble wrap or a handful of foam.
A stack of bubble envelopes for small, soft items.
Labels or blank stickers for the address.
Scissors or a utility knife.
Commonly fitting box sizes
For pop-ups and markets, compact, flat boxes are the most practical: they take up little space in your bin and are suitable for most small items. For an orientation on sizes and prices:
Take one size larger than you think you need; you can always shorten or fill a box, but too small is too small.
Tape and dispenser: why a manual dispenser is handy
At a stall or in a pop-up, you have one workspace. A manual dispenser with a good roll of tape is faster than loose rolls that roll everywhere. The Kinzo tape dispenser with 2 rolls (€ 9.95) is compact enough to fit in a bin, and you immediately have a spare. For the bottom of your box, choose a strong roll — for example, KINZO packaging tape 50 meters × 48 mm (€ 3.00). For larger volumes, a box of 36 rolls pays off, but for a day at the market, one roll per twenty packages is more than enough.
Void fill: how much and what kind
Do not underestimate void fill. A package that rattles often arrives damaged, even if it only weighs 200 grams. For pop-up shipments, two formats are useful:
Bubble wrap on a roll for fragile or hard items. A roll of 500 mm × 500 m (€ 12.95) is large for a market, so cut a few meters in advance and take that with you.
Bubble envelopes for small, soft items. The bubble envelopes 22×17 cm (€ 0.90) do double duty: protection and packaging.
If you want a more luxurious look, opt for the metallic version immediately — you won't need to bring separate gift packaging.
The customer chooses: take it with them or have it shipped
At a pop-up, you'll get two types of questions. One customer buys and leaves with a bag. The other wants it delivered to their home — for example, because it's a large item, because it's a gift that can go directly to the recipient, or because they're using public transport. Arrange your shipping so that you can ask at the stall:
Do you want to take it with you or have it shipped?
To which address?
Shall I send it tonight or tomorrow?
Note this information on a piece of paper or in a simple order list on your phone. Calculate shipping costs in advance for two formats (letterbox package and small parcel) and communicate them clearly at your stall. Do you regularly sell on-site? Then put one rate per box size on your price list — that saves discussions.
After the market: one shipping moment
Don't ship your packages on the spot (that takes too much time), but plan one packing moment at the end of the day or the next morning. Work in batches: first all letterbox packages, then all small parcels. With a fixed stack of boxes on one side, tape and dispenser in the middle, and labels on the other side, you'll have ten to fifteen packages ready within half an hour.
For complete peace of mind, a ready-made starter kit is often more convenient than separate purchases. The Shipping Starter Kit (€ 53.25) contains letterbox boxes, tape, and bubble wrap — enough for your first dozens of orders without forgetting to order anything.
Small things that prevent big mistakes
Always repeat the address aloud. In a busy market, a customer often hastily writes down their address. Repeat it and correct it immediately.
Place your package upright in the dispenser corner as soon as it's closed, with the address facing up. You'll stack faster and won't confuse orders.
Weigh the first of each size on your home scale to know which rate it falls into. If you're on the border, scale down to the lighter format — a few millimeters less void fill can make a difference.
Bring one spare dispenser. A tape roll running out in the middle of the market is a minor disaster.
Ready for your next pop-up
Everything you read above literally fits into one plastic bin. Set that bin up, and you'll be packing-ready within ten minutes at your next market or pop-up.
