Putting together your own care package: what do you combine and how do you wrap it?

A pre-packaged care kit is rarely exactly what you're looking for. Assembling your own isn't more expensive, but you do need to know how to combine products, match scents, and get it all neatly wrapped.

Ready-made care packages have a recurring problem: they are assembled based on how they look in cellophane, not on what someone actually uses. Four 30 ml bottles that run out after two showers, a washcloth no one asks for, and a scent you would never have chosen yourself. The recipient thanks you kindly and puts it in the bathroom cabinet.

Assembling it yourself takes half an hour and almost always results in a better gift, often for the same amount. All you need is a bit of structure: first choose who it's for, then what goes in it, and only then what it looks like.

Start with the recipient, not the shelf

The most useful question isn't "what's nice?" but "what will this person use up within three weeks?". Someone who showers every day and rarely bathes will have little use for bath salts. Someone who works outdoors a lot is more likely to use a rich cream than a body mist.

Three profiles that are almost always accurate:

  • The practical user. Wants large formats of things that get used up: shower gel, body lotion, scrub.
  • The enthusiast. Enjoys the ritual more than the product: bath bombs, bath foam, home fragrance.
  • The caregiver with a reason. Think of someone with a fresh tattoo, dry hands in the heating season, or a newborn child. Here, suitability outweighs scent.

The composition: one main product, two small ones, a surprise

A well-composed set has a clear focal point. Without a main product, it becomes a collection of samples; with three main products, it becomes expensive and messy.

As a main product, something with volume and visible value works well. The Oriental Body Scrub Hammam Pot 500 gr from €5.95 is a good example, as is the Oriental Body Scrub Coconut 400 gram from €9.95. If you prefer bath products, choose the Bath Salt and Bath Foam Champagne Bottle with rose scent from €6.95 or the Soap Roses Deluxe Gift Set - 18 pieces from €19.95, which is already a gift on its own.

Around that, you add two smaller products for daily use: for example, Endless Love Shower Foam Cashmere and Rose 200 ml from €6.00, Lavato Bath Foam Peach 250 ml from €9.95, or Body Butter Banana Scent 200 ml from €9.95.

And then one surprise: something small that no one buys for themselves. A Rainbow Bath Bomb 180 g from €9.00, a Soap Rose from €5.00, a Glitter Body Scrub 200 ml from €4.95, or the Heart-shaped Eau de Parfum 30 ml in gift box from €4.95.

Scent: choose a line or intentionally go neutral

This is where it most often goes wrong. Three products with three strong, different scents clash with each other, even in the box. Two approaches yield a calmer result.

The first is to stick to a scent family: stay with floral (rose, lavender), fruity (peach, strawberry, coconut), or sweet. For example, the Fragrance Mist with strawberry extract 150 ml from €9.95 and the Treaclemoon Bodyspray Frosted Candy Angel from €4.95 combine better with fruity than with spicy products.

The second is to choose one scented item and keep the rest neutral. For example, give only a body mist or only Luxury Scented Reed Diffuser Muze 150 ml from €12.00 as a scent accent, and supplement with products that are primarily for care. If you don't know what scent someone likes, this is the safest route.

For those who prefer no scent at all, you can build around basic products like Original Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly 100 ml from €7.95 or the larger size Vaseline Original Protecting Jelly 250 ml from €10.00. For specific situations, there are targeted sets, such as the Ink'd Tattoo Total Care 4-Pack from €24.95 or, for a baby gift, the Inoli Baby Bath Oil Calming 200 ml from €6.99. With such products, always read the label and let the recipient decide if it suits them.

Size: rather two large than six small

Small sizes feel generous in the box and meager in use. As a rule of thumb: at least one product of 200 ml or more, and the rest can be small. Travel sizes are useful if you know someone travels a lot, or if you need to send the gift and want to pay attention to weight.

Also pay attention to the storage location. Jars and bottles that sit unopened in a cupboard for months are fine; if you open something and use it slowly, a large size is a waste. Look at the symbol with the open jar on the packaging: it indicates how long a product is intended to be used after opening.

Wrapping: the box does half the work

A set that lies loose in tissue paper looks unfinished at home. A box with a fixed shape immediately makes it a gift.

For a compact set with three to four products, the White Cube Gift Box 12x12x12 cm from €2.99 works well. If you want to show what's inside, choose the Black Gift Box with window 11x10.5x12.5 cm from €2.99. For something more playful, for example if you're handing it out at a party, the Yellow Treat Box with handle 15x8x8 cm from €2.99 is handy, and a Cardboard Bag Always In My Heart from €3.00 is enough for a gift you hand over in person.

Fill the space between the bottles, otherwise everything will shift around. Pink Foam Hearts decorative filling from €4.99 does this and is also decorative. Place the heaviest product at the back, the small items in front, and lay the card on top so it doesn't disappear among the filling.

If the gift needs to be shipped

A gift box is not a shipping box. Thin cardboard boxes with lids open or dent during transit. Therefore, pack the gift box in a second, sturdier package.

First close pump bottles or tape the pump, wrap glass separately in Bubble Wrap 500 mm x 500 m from €12.95, and put small loose items in a Metallic Bubble Envelope 22x17 cm from €0.90 so they don't disappear among the filling material. If you are shipping a set with liquids, place the box upright and indicate that on the package.

Three example sets

Set Contents Starting price together
Practical Body scrub Hammam 500 gr, shower foam 200 ml, body spray, white cube box € 19.89
Luxury Soap Roses Gift Set 18 pieces, bath bomb, reed diffuser, window box € 43.94
Winter care Vaseline 100 ml, body butter 200 ml, glitter body scrub, treat box € 25.84

The amounts mentioned are starting prices; if you choose other variants or larger sizes, the total will be higher. When shipping, also include the outer packaging.

Assembling is easiest by first browsing Body Care, Soap & Dispensers, Bath Salt & Bath Bombs, and All in Drugstore, and only then choosing the packaging in Gift Packaging & Gift Boxes.
