A greeting card with your package: envelope, size, sticking, and what message works

How to send a greeting card with your package without it getting creased — sizes, envelopes, placement in the box, and what to write on it.
A package can be more than what's inside. A greeting card that falls out of the box as soon as someone opens it adds a small touch to the experience — and thus increases the likelihood of that customer returning. For small webshops, it's one of the cheapest ways to personalize your shipments. But the card needs to arrive neatly: dry, legible, and not folded. This requires three decisions: what size, what envelope, and where in the box.
Size: choose one and stick with it
For an enclosed card in a package, there's no point in using five different sizes. You save time and avoid errors by using one standard size for 90% of your shipments. In the Netherlands, these three are the most common:
Size
Dimensions
Purpose
Small (business card-plus)
approx. 85 × 55 mm to 100 × 70 mm
Quick thank you, discount code
A6 greeting card
105 × 148 mm
Personal message, gift card
Folded A5 card
148 × 210 mm folded to 148 × 105 mm
More extensive message, holidays
For most webshops, A6 is the most practical compromise: enough space to write something personal, fits in a standard envelope, and doesn't get lost in a larger box.
Envelope: choose one that fits
Your card belongs in an envelope — otherwise, it will get dirty, creased, or scratched against the rest of the contents. The envelope size is based on paper sizes:
If you want to order one type of envelope: choose C6 white. It fits most card sizes and is neutral enough for any tone of voice.
What to put on the card
A card that adds nothing to the shipment can also be omitted. It works if it does one of these three things:
Personally thank. For your first 100 customers, you can do this by hand. After that: printed with a handwritten name or initials, which reads differently than completely printed text.
Give a concrete tip or discount code. For example: "Next order? Use code XYZ for a 10% discount within 30 days." Measurable and useful.
Ask for something. For example: "Satisfied? Let us know with a review. Is something wrong? Email us first — and we'll fix it." Simple, effective.
What you should avoid: generic text without a signature, or a card with only your logo. That reads like an advertisement.
In the box: where to put it?
The card should not be loose at the bottom of the box. It will shift, get bent, or end up on top of the protection when opened. Four places that work well:
On top of the contents, visible upon opening. For the card as a first impression.
Between two layers of tissue paper or between the product and filler. If you want a gift effect.
In a small visible corner between the product and the edge of the box, with the text side up.
Glued or attached to the product with a small sealing sticker. Only for items that allow it (not textiles, not soft packaging).
Under no circumstances under the product: the chance that someone finds it is small, and it will come out creased.
Protecting against moisture and creases
A single greeting card in a regular shipping box usually survives, unless your package has been in a heavy downpour. For extra certainty: place the envelope against the flat top of the box, with a strip of bubble wrap over it. For packages that end up in a parcel machine or under other packages, that's the difference between a pristine card and a dented corner.
Are you shipping in a bubble envelope of 22x17 cm (€0.90) instead of a box? Then place the card with the text side against the product, not against the adhesive strip — otherwise, it will tear when opened.
Quantities: how many to order at once?
Calculate what you send in 2 to 3 months and order that many envelopes at once. With a large bundle, it saves a lot per envelope. For orientation:
Volume per week

Up to 10 packages
50 × C6

10 – 25 packages
500 × white 156×220

For December, you might consider doing a small part in red — for Christmas and holiday packages. But make a clear distinction in your stock, otherwise, the red envelopes might end up sitting on the shelf in May.
Briefly summarized
Choose one size, usually A6.
Choose one envelope, usually C6 white.
Write something personal, give a reason to return, or ask for feedback.
Place the card on top of the contents, not underneath.
Order envelopes in bundles of 50 or 500, not individually.
