A product page tells you what an item can do, but rarely how it feels in your hand. This buying guide covers length, grip, buttons, power supply, and maintenance.
A product page usually states what an item can do: the number of settings, the length, the material. What is rarely mentioned is how it feels in your hand. Yet, that is the reason why one item disappears into a drawer after three uses and another lasts for years. A button you can't find by touch, a handle that's too thick for your hand, a charging pin you lose — these aren't minor details, they are the reasons people are dissatisfied with a purchase.
This guide is about the practical side of choosing: weight, grip, operation, power supply, and maintenance. It offers no advice on what you should feel, but rather on what you can glean from a product page before ordering.
What the size in the title tells you
For this product range, the length is often in the product title, and that is useful information — especially for operation. A long model provides reach and grip, while a short model is more discreet and lighter, but your hand is closer to the end.
Light, but you're more likely to clench it than hold it
If there's no length given, the photo with a hand or a measuring line is all you have. In that case, ask — a seller can measure the item for you.
Grip: where you hold it and for how long
Look at the photo to see where your hand will rest. Three things determine if it will remain comfortable:
Thickness of the shaft. A shaft that is equally thick throughout allows you to decide where to grip it. A model with a taper at the grip forces one position.
Finish. Silicone has more grip than smooth ABS plastic, even with wet hands. A model described as silicone, such as the Mini Wand Massager Black Silicone - 6 Settings USB (€ 54.95), will slip less than a hard plastic model.
Weight and balance. A heavy head on a light shaft feels heavier than it is after a few minutes. This is not a drawback, but it is something to know before buying.
If you want multiple grip positions without buying multiple items, a model with attachments is a practical compromise. The Pocket Rocket Mini Wand Vibrator with 4 Attachments - Black (€ 4.50) is a cheap example: one handle, interchangeable heads.
Buttons, settings, and what twenty settings means
Many settings sound like a lot of choice. In practice, it's mostly a lot of pressing. On a model with twenty functions and one button, you have to cycle through the entire sequence to get back to the setting you were looking for. On a model with two buttons — one for intensity, one for pattern — you'll be where you want to be within two actions.
Separate control. The Double Egg - Wireless Double Vibrating Eggs (€ 39.95) does not have controls on the item itself. This saves you from fumbling with your hand, but it does mean you have to hold something extra.
Also pay attention to where the button is located. A button at the bottom of the handle can be found by touch; a button halfway up needs to be searched for. And note whether the button is recessed or raised — a recessed button won't accidentally press in your bag.
Batteries, USB, or neither
The power supply determines how much hassle you have when you least want it.
Separate batteries. Can be replaced immediately, provided you have them at home. AAA is a common size; a pack of Dynamic Energy batteries R03 AAA 16 pieces costs € 5.95, and Panasonic AAA Zinc 4 pieces € 9.95. Disadvantage: the battery compartment is often the weakest point when it comes to water.
USB rechargeable. No batteries needed, but you depend on the included cable or charging pin. Models with magnetic pins are brand-specific; if you lose the pin, a replacement is not always available. Store it with the item, not with your other cables.
Water and connections. The I Rub My Kitty Vibrating Massager Grey - Waterproof (€ 12.95) is an example of a model where waterproofing is stated as a feature. Always explicitly check for each item if it can be used underwater; never assume.
Cleaning without destroying the controls
Most damage to controls occurs during cleaning. Water getting into a battery compartment or charging port makes buttons unreliable. Two rules of thumb: keep the connection dry, and use a product designed for these materials instead of dish soap or alcohol.
Dry an item before storing it, and don't store it loosely among other items. Materials lying against each other can damage one another; a pouch or a separate compartment prevents this.
How to choose in five steps
Determine whether you need reach (long handle) or compactness (short model).
Look at the photo to see where your hand will be and whether the surface is silicone or hard plastic.
Count the buttons, not the settings. One button with twenty functions is slower than two buttons with ten.
Consciously choose between batteries (always replaceable) and USB (no loose batteries, but a cable to lose).
Include a cleaner and, if the item is silicone, water-based lubricant in your order.

Models with a long handle are grouped together in Wand Vibrators, compact versions in Mini Vibrator. The complete overview can be found in Vibrator, and cleaners in Toycleaners and Lubricant.
