The category names in an 18+ range appear similar, but the articles within them function completely differently. This guide explains the four main groups based on drive, material, size, and maintenance.

If you filter for women's items in an 18+ webshop, you'll quickly get a few hundred results. Vibrator, bullet, air-pulse, dildo, beads: the category names are listed next to each other as if they describe the same type of thing, while the difference between a €7.95 wand vibrator and a €49.95 air-pulse stimulator isn't in the price but in what the device does. This guide explains the assortment across four main categories, with characteristics to look for in each category: power, material, size, and maintenance.

Four Categories, Four Different Principles

Almost everything in this part of the assortment falls into one of these four groups. They differ fundamentally in one aspect: how they work.

Category Function Motor? Price Range in Store
Vibrators Vibration via a motor Yes €4.50 to approx. €40
Air-Pulse Stimulators Pressure waves, no contact vibration Yes €9.95 to approx. €50
Dildos No power, only shape and material No €14.99 to approx. €20
Kegel Balls and Vaginal Beads Weight, sometimes vibration Sometimes €9.95 to approx. €35

This classification primarily helps with exclusion. If you're looking for something without batteries or a charging cable, you can immediately skip two of the four categories. If you want to be able to switch modes, the dildo category is out.

Vibrators: Wand, Bullet, Mini, and G-Spot

Vibrators are the largest group and vary widely in size. The classic 13.3 cm wand vibrator (€7.95) runs on batteries and is smooth and straight. At the other end of the size spectrum are bullets and mini models: the Pocket Rocket mini wand vibrator with four attachments costs €4.50 and is compact enough for a drawer or toiletry bag.

A G-spot model is recognizable by its curved tip. The 12 cm Mini G-spot Vibrator (€9.99) is an inexpensive example of this shape. If you want two separate elements that you can place individually, there's the Double Egg with two wireless vibrating eggs (€39.95).

What to specifically look for with vibrators:

  • Power. Batteries are cheaper to buy, rechargeable saves you individual cells. If it doesn't say which batteries it takes, ask before ordering.
  • Material. Silicone feels softer and is easy to clean. Hard plastic is cheaper and stiffer.
  • Sound. Small motors generally produce a higher, thinner sound; larger motors sound lower. This is rarely stated in product descriptions, but sometimes in reviews.
  • Water Resistance. "Splash-proof" is not the same as "submersible." When in doubt: only wipe clean, do not rinse under the tap.

Air-Pulse: A Different Principle Than Vibration

Air-pulse stimulators do not work with a vibrating head but with pressure waves in a small opening. They barely touch the body. This makes them a separate category, even though they are often found among vibrators.

In the store, this group ranges from the Oral Queen with 10 settings in three colors (€27.00) to the brand-name version Satisfyer Pro Penguin Next Generation (€49.95). The price difference is usually in the battery, the finish of the silicone head, and the number of settings.

If you want something similar but cheaper and with vibration instead of pressure waves, then models like the Venus Butterfly (€9.95) or the waterproof I Rub My Kitty massager in grey (€12.95) are options.

Dildos: No Technology, But Size and Base Matter

A dildo has no motor. Therefore, all choices revolve around shape, material, and dimensions — and fortunately, these are usually listed on the product page. Pay attention to three numbers: total length, insertable length, and diameter. The total length says little if a large part of it is the base.

The Rocket John series shows how such a range is structured: 16.5 cm in two colors (€18.99), 25.5 cm in black (€19.99), and 28.5 cm in skin tone (€16.00). There are also double versions without a wide base, such as the Rocket Dong of 20.4 x 3 cm (€14.99).

A wide, flat base is functional: it helps hold the item and ensures it doesn't slide further than intended. For anal use, such a base is not an extra but a requirement.

Beads: Weight is the Main Variable

Kegel balls and vaginal beads are weighted balls, usually made of silicone and usually with a retrieval cord. The differences lie in weight and diameter, which vary widely. In the assortment, you'll find, among others, silicone kegel balls of 90 grams (€10.00) and a heavier version of 165 grams (€14.00), both 16.5 cm long including the cord.

There are three ways this category is sold:

  1. Loose, one weight. Such as the Smart Duo Balls in skin tone (€9.95). Inexpensive, but you're stuck with that one weight.
  2. As a set with increasing sizes. The Kegel Balls 3-pack in a luxury gift box (€34.95) contains three sizes in one box.
  3. With technology. There are versions with a motor and remote control, such as the vibrating kegel balls of 32 mm with remote control (€35.00).

If you're buying this for the first time, a set with increasing sizes is more practical than a single loose ball: you don't have to guess which weight fits. Pay attention to the stated diameter — for this category, it says more than the length.

What You'll Need Anyway

Two things are essential with almost every purchase in this part of the store, regardless of the category.

Water-based lubricant is the safe standard: it combines with silicone, hard plastic, and glass. Neutral variants are available from €7.95 for 100 ml, such as Peep Pleasure water-based or the Intiem Classic neutral lubricant (€10.00). Avoid silicone-based lubricant with silicone items; it will eventually damage the surface.

A toy cleaner saves hassle afterward. A 150 ml toy cleaner spray costs €8.95, a fragrance-free 120 ml variant €7.95. For items with a motor or battery, this is preferable to rinsing under the tap, as it prevents getting the device wet in places where it shouldn't.

Choosing in Three Steps

  1. First, determine the category, not the model. With or without a motor, vibrating or pressure waves, external or internal. This halves the list twice in a row.
  2. Then look at the numbers. Insertable length and diameter for dildos, weight and diameter for balls, power and number of settings for vibrators.
  3. Factor in maintenance. Lubricant, a cleaner, and possibly batteries come on top of the purchase price. For a €10 item, this can double the amount.

If you're torn between two items that seem to do the same thing on paper, look at the material and the finish of the seams. This often determines how long something lasts more than the number of settings on the box.

Further Exploring the Assortment

If you want to browse by category: vibrators, mini-vibrators and bullets, clitoral stimulators, dildos, and kegel balls and vaginal beads each have their own collection. For maintenance, you'll find everything under lubricant and toy cleaners. All orders are shipped in neutral packaging.
