Silicone, TPE, insertable length, IPX7, splash-proof: the terms you encounter on an 18+ product page, explained by topic. This way, you can read about materials, sizes, technology, and maintenance in half a minute.
An 18+ product page often contains more information in two lines than you might initially process: silicone, 10 settings, USB, splash-proof, total length 18 cm. Each of these words tells you something about how to clean the item, how long it will last, what lubricant is suitable, and if the size matches what you had in mind. Those who understand the terms will have to guess much less — and return fewer items.
Below are the terms you will encounter in this category, grouped by topic and explained concisely. What a product exactly is will always be stated on the product page itself; this list helps you read that page.
Materials
Silicone. A non-porous, elastic material that can withstand hot water well. Recognizable by its matte, slightly grippy surface. Do not combine silicone with silicone-based lubricant: the two can interact and make the surface dull or sticky.
TPE and TPR. Thermoplastic elastomers: softer, more pliable materials often used for realistic designs. They are more porous than silicone, meaning the surface has a microscopically open structure and thus retains moisture and residue longer. Thorough cleaning and complete drying are more important here than with silicone.
ABS. A hard plastic, used for handles, button housings, and smooth bullets. Non-porous and easy to wipe clean.
PU leather and synthetic leather. Materials for belts, cuffs, and harnesses. Not machine washable; wipe with a slightly damp cloth and let dry flat.
Glass and metal. Heavy, non-porous, smooth, and easy to clean. They do take on the temperature of their surroundings, so they will feel cold after a cold night in a drawer.
Body-safe. A designation manufacturers use for materials intended for skin contact. It is a product description from the manufacturer, not an official quality mark. Therefore, always also look at the material itself.
Phthalate-free. The manufacturer states that no phthalates (plasticizers) are used. This is also a statement from the manufacturer and is separate from an independent test.
Sizes: what each number stands for
Sizes are the most common cause of disappointment. There are often three different numbers mixed up.
Measurement
What it is
Total length
The full length of the item, including base, handle, or motor housing
Insertable length
The part that is actually usable — this is usually the number you need
Diameter
The thickness at the widest point; sometimes there is a separate diameter for the tip
Circumference
The measurement around, approximately three times the diameter
A title like Double Dildo Rocket Dong Black 20.4 x 3 cm (€ 14.99) gives length and diameter; for a realistic vibrator of 22 cm (€ 14.95), that is the total length, and you will find the insertable length in the specifications. Place the measurement next to a ruler before ordering — 3 centimeters in diameter is significantly more than it looks in a photo.
Base or pedestal. A widened end. For anal use, this is not a style detail but a functional requirement: without a wide base, an item should not be used there.
One size. For clothing and harnesses: one size, with adjustable straps or stretch. Always look at the stated circumference measurements and not the designation itself.
Technology and operation
Settings and functions. A designation like "10 settings" usually counts speeds and patterns together. Speeds are constant levels, patterns are changing rhythms. For a bullet vibrator with 10 settings and USB charging (€ 16.00), this does not automatically mean ten different strengths.
Magnetic charger. Two contact points where the cable magnetically snaps on, instead of an open port. This allows for a sealed housing. Keep the contact points clean and dry.
Remote control and app. A separate remote control works via a radio signal and has a limited range within the same room. App-controlled items such as the Travel Egg (€ 69.95) or an app-controlled plug with 9 vibration settings (€ 39.95) pair with your phone via Bluetooth. Check which app is required and whether it is still maintained.
Noise level. Rarely stated in decibels, usually described as "whisper quiet" or "discreet." Rule of thumb: the heavier the motor and the harder the casing, the more sound you will hear. A soft casing dampens sound.
Water, cleaning, and maintenance
Splash-proof. Resistant to splashes and rinsing under the tap, but not to submersion.
IP rating. Codes like IPX4 or IPX7 come from an international standard for protection against moisture. IPX7 means resistant to submersion up to approximately one meter for half an hour. Not every manufacturer states or tests this, so also read the regular description.
Toy cleaner. A cleaner that you spray on the surface and rinse or wipe off, such as a toycleaner spray of 150 ml (€ 8.95) or an odorless variant of 120 ml (€ 7.95). Let everything dry completely before storing it; moisture in a closed drawer is the most common reason for material to start smelling musty.
Sealed. A foil or sticker around the packaging. For items that are delivered sealed for hygiene reasons, the right to return the order may expire once the seal is broken. Read the webshop's return policy before opening.
Neutral or discreet shipping. An outer packaging without a brand name or image. What is stated on the packing slip and sender fields varies per seller — if it's not stated, please inquire.
Gift box. A presentation packaging, not a shipping packaging. If you want to keep it intact, send it in a regular box with padding around it.
Further exploration
Once you know which terms are important, you can read a product page in half a minute. For care and cleaning, check out lubricants, toycleaners, and intimate hygiene; for the items themselves, check out vibrators, dildos, and the complete 18+ assortment. If a specification is not on the page you are looking for — material, insertable length, charger type? Email the product name to info@verpakkingdeals.nl, and we will look it up and update the page.
