What to do when your 18+ order arrives: check the seal and contents, initial cleaning, charging or batteries, the right lubricant, and dry storage.

The package is on the table. You placed the order, the box is neutral, everything is correct. And then? Most people take the item out, look at it, and put it in a drawer. Yet, it's the first twenty minutes that determine whether you'll still enjoy it two years from now — and whether you immediately notice if there's something wrong with your order.

This is a practical sequence for when your 18+ order arrives: what to check, what to clean, how to charge, and where to store it afterward.

First check, even before you open anything

Inspect the outside of the packaging before you cut it open. Pay attention to three things:

  • Is the factory seal intact? Many 18+ items come in a sealed blister pack or box with shrink wrap. If it's still on and undamaged, the item has not been unwrapped before.
  • Does the content match what's on the box? Color, size, and model name are usually on the side. With series that have multiple sizes or colors, this sometimes goes wrong.
  • Are the accessories included? Think of a charging cable, a remote control, a storage pouch, or a key. If something is missing, it's easy to report now and difficult in two weeks.

Important to know: for sealed items that cannot be returned for hygienic reasons, the right of withdrawal expires as soon as you break the seal. If you doubt whether you ordered the correct item, check this before you open the foil. Also, keep the packaging as long as you're in doubt — a return without the box is often more complicated.

The first cleaning: yes, even for a new item

A new item is not automatically clean. Products spend months in warehouses, are packaged in factories, and collected in distribution centers. A light layer of dust or a manufacturing odor is normal. A first cleaning removes this and immediately gives you a good impression of the material.

For most materials, lukewarm water with a mild cleaner is sufficient. A Toy Cleaner Spray 150ml - Clean & Play costs €8.95 and works with a few pumps and a clean cloth. If you prefer something unscented, Unscented Toy Cleaner 120 ml for €7.95 is an alternative. For items without electronics that you can rinse completely, you can also use an Intimate Wash Gel 400 ml – pH-neutral (€7.95).

Pay attention to where water should not go

The difference lies in the connection. Items with a charging port or battery compartment are often splash-proof but not intended to be held under a tap. Check the packaging or manual for an indication. If nothing is stated about water resistance, assume that the item is not waterproof: clean it with a damp cloth and spray, not with a stream of water.

Always dry completely after cleaning before storing anything. Moisture remaining in a seam or around a button is the most common cause of a musty smell after a few weeks in the closet.

Charging or batteries: do this before the first use

Items with a built-in battery are often shipped half-charged and have then spent weeks to months in a box. Fully charge such an item once before using it. This takes an hour or two and prevents it from shutting off halfway.

A few practical points:

  • Use the included cable. Magnetic charging points and pin connections are often model-specific; a random USB cable may not fit or make proper contact.
  • Charge in a dry place. Not in the bathroom, not immediately after cleaning.
  • Don't leave it on the charger for days. Fully charged is sufficient; leaving it permanently connected is not necessary for most batteries.

If your item runs on batteries, immediately add a spare set. Panasonic AAA Zinc 4 pieces costs €9.95; if you have multiple items using AAA, then Dynamic Energy R03 AAA 16 pieces zinc 1.5V for €5.95 is a much cheaper option per piece. If you are often on the go or don't have an outlet nearby, a Power bank 3000mAh for €14.95 is a simple solution.

Lubricant: choose one that matches the material

This is where many people regret it afterward. Silicone-based lubricant can damage the surface of silicone items: it becomes sticky or dull, and that cannot be reversed. Water-based lubricant can be combined with almost all materials — silicone, glass, metal, ABS — and is therefore the safe standard choice if you have one bottle at home.

In the assortment, you can choose from Lotus Flower Aqua Lubricant 150 ml from €4.15, Nyoy Natural Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml from €4.00, or Peep Pleasure Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml for €7.95. Before buying, check the label to see if it says "waterbasis" or "water based"; that indication is more decisive than the flavor or brand.

Where to put it afterward

The drawer where everything rolls around loosely is the worst place. Materials lying against each other can react with each other — especially soft materials like TPE and silicone can get spots with prolonged contact. Therefore, store items separately, in the included pouch or in a clean fabric bag.

Three rules of thumb for storage:

  1. Dry and dark. Not a bathroom cabinet where it steams daily, not a windowsill in the sun.
  2. Do not stack under weight. Soft material that is compressed for months does not always return to its original shape.
  3. Remove batteries if not using for a long time. Leaking batteries are the fastest way to write off an otherwise perfectly fine item.

If necessary, note the purchase date on a sticker or in your phone. Materials like TPE and latex age faster than silicone or glass, and then it's useful to know how old something actually is when it starts to feel sticky.

Briefly summarized

Check the seal and contents before opening. Clean the item once and dry it completely. Fully charge it or have spare batteries ready. Make sure your lubricant matches the material. Store everything separately and dry. This is less than half an hour's work in total, and it will save you a lot of hassle later.
