An 18+ gift is usually not a problem to buy — the problem starts with handing it over. Do you want your partner to unwrap it with the children present? No. Do you want the aunt who accepts the package in the hallway of the apartment building to see what's inside? No, not that either. This guide is about that last part: how to package and hand over an 18+ gift so that when it's opened, it elicits precisely the reaction you're looking for, and at any other time, it's just a closed box.
Two layers: neutral outside, romantic inside
The simplest principle for an 18+ gift: choose two layers. The outer one is discreet and says nothing about the contents. The inner one is well-cared-for, romantic, or playful — that's the layer the recipient opens. This way, the package survives the journey from the parcel point to the couch, and the unboxing moment remains private.
A good exterior is a plain cardboard box in a neutral color — black, white, or brown — without text or print. Avoid translucent bags or envelopes with text hinting at toys. For the interior, a luxurious gift box with a lid or magnetic closure is most commonly used: small, neat, with a touch of anticipation upon opening.
The outer packaging: closed and discreet
For a discreet exterior, a neutral shipping box in a modest size is sufficient. The box doesn't have to be clinically brown — black or white even looks more refined than standard cardboard and doesn't reveal the contents.
This is the box the recipient opens. Choose something that would make you happy to receive yourself. Velvety jewelry boxes, gift boxes with windows, or luxurious gift boxes with a marble look — all suitable.
What you put in it and how you arrange it determines the first impression the recipient gets. For example, combine one "main gift" with two smaller, usable products. A small bottle of massage oil, a sachet of lubricant, a card — put together in the inner box, this sets the mood for the play that follows.
A sachet version of lubricant or massage oil is often nicer for a gift than a large bottle: you can put three in the box and it looks more elegant.
Even more discreet: packaging that reveals nothing
If your package ends up at a shared mailbox or a parcel point, an extra layer of "hiding" is useful. A fake book with storage space makes your gift look like a regular book on the shelf — fun to give and can then be used for years as storage for items.
Choose your moment. Give the gift when you're alone — not between two other gifts at a family birthday.
Tell them what it is before they open it. Whisper it, or put a card on the box. This prevents embarrassment with others and ensures the recipient can open it calmly.
Don't hide the game in the gift itself. If you can't play with it immediately, let the gift be a reason for later in the week. The packaging can simply sit on the bedside table for the rest of the weekend.
Prepare the laundry. Washing and care items (lubricant, wash gel) are part of a good 18+ gift — include them, even if the focus is on something else.
