Gift box or bulk packaging? Here's how an 18+ product is delivered

The same item can be delivered in a gift box or a simple pouch. What those mentions on the product page mean, when the difference matters, and what you can order separately.
You order two of the same model bodystocking, from the same brand, with the same article number. One item arrives in a sleek box with a photo on the front. The other is in a transparent plastic bag with only a sticker on it. No mistake, no different product: it's the same item in two packaging variants, and that was clearly stated on the product page.
For 18+ items, packaging is mentioned more often than for other categories, because the packaging says something about three things at once: whether you can give it as a gift, how to store it, and what you pay for it. Below you can read what the common designations mean.
In four situations, the packaging type is really crucial:
You're giving it as a gift. A gift box saves you wrapping effort and gives the gift a finished look. Bulk packaging is fine to give away, but then you'll want to put a box around it yourself.
You store it longer. Textiles in a cardboard box maintain their shape and stay clean in a drawer or closet. A plastic bag protects against dust, but not against creases or pressure from other items.
You resell it. For a shop or a market stall, the printed box is your product information and your presentation. Bulk is only interesting then if you do something about the presentation yourself.
You pay attention to the price. Bulk variants are not automatically cheaper, but packaging is the easiest part for a supplier to save on. Therefore, compare within the same model number.
What the packaging doesn't say
Important: the packaging type says nothing about the quality of the item itself, nor about its size. A bulk-packed TL15 item is the same garment as an item in a box. For the size, refer to the indication on the product page itself: "one size", "one size fits most", "M/L", "XL" or a clothing size like 40/42 all mean something different.
How it arrives at your home
Apart from the item's packaging, there is also the shipping packaging: the box or envelope the package is in. These two are often confused. The item's box might have a large photo on the front; the outer packaging of the shipment does not necessarily reflect this and is neutral for most sellers.
If you consciously buy in bulk because you like the item and the box means nothing to you, you can still create something presentable. This usually costs less than the price difference between the two variants.
Is there anything about the packaging in the title or description? Words like "gift box", "colour box", "bulk packed" or "plastic bag" are the signals.
Is the photo a photo of the item or of the packaging? For a gift box, you often see the box itself; that's a clue.
Does the size indication match what you're looking for, regardless of the packaging?
If you're ordering multiple items, make a conscious choice: everything in a gift box for presents, everything in bulk if you're packaging it yourself anyway.
If you're unsure about what you'll receive for a specific item, ask before you order. It's faster than a return, and for these types of items, you'd rather avoid a return anyway.
