Before you consider size or model, you actually choose a drive system: no motor, batteries, rechargeable battery with USB, or air pressure. What each type means for maintenance, noise, lifespan, and price.
Most buying guides start with shape or size. In practice, the first decision lies elsewhere: does the item have a motor or not? That single point then determines almost everything—how you clean it, whether it makes noise, what can break, how much it costs, and whether you'll need batteries.
Below, we compare the four types of drives side-by-side, straightforwardly and without fuss, with examples from our range and their corresponding prices. This is a buying guide, not advice on use or health; if you have doubts about the latter, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Four categories, briefly broken down
No drive. No electronics, no batteries, no charging port. Maintenance is simple, lifespan primarily depends on the material.
Battery-operated motor. Low purchase price, you buy separate batteries. The battery compartment is usually the weak point.
Rechargeable with USB. Higher purchase price, no batteries needed, but a cable you shouldn't lose.
Air pressure. A distinct technology with an opening instead of a vibrating surface. Requires more careful cleaning of that opening.
No motor: the least that can break
Items without a drive are the easiest to maintain, as there's nothing inside that shouldn't get wet. They have no settings, no charging indicator, and no firmware that will no longer be supported after three years. What remains are material and shape.
Secondly: the battery compartment. With this type, it's usually where water enters and where the seal eventually dries out. Remove batteries if you don't use something for a longer period—leaking batteries destroy contact points, which cannot be repaired.
At the top end of this group are remote control or app-controlled models: the Remote Plug with 9 vibration settings (€ 39.95) and the Travel Egg, app-controlled (€ 69.95). Keep in mind that you become dependent on an app and a connection: if the connection doesn't work, you'll only have the button on the item itself. Before buying, check if the model can also be operated manually.
The real vulnerability of this category is the charging cable. Many models use a magnetic cable that is not interchangeable with your phone's cable. Store it with the item, not in the cable drawer.
Air pressure: different technology, different cleaning ritual
Air pressure models work with pulsating air in an opening instead of a vibrating surface. They are in the upper half of the price range: the Satisfyer Pro Penguin Next Generation is € 49.95 and has limited stock.
Practical difference: with a smooth exterior, you rinse it off and you're done. With an opening, you have to get inside, and that requires a spray or a soft brush instead of a wipe. Take this into account in your choice if quick cleaning outweighs technology for you.
Factor these two into your budget. An item of € 7.95 with € 16 worth of cleaner and lubricant added is more expensive in total than it seems; with a € 40 model, that same amount is barely noticeable. This often significantly shifts the comparison.
