Length and diameter are always listed on the product page, but hardness and texture rarely. This buying guide explains what smooth, ribbed, and dotted mean for use, lubricant, and cleaning.
Two items of exactly the same length and diameter can feel completely different. Product pages almost always state the length and thickness of an item, but rarely its material hardness and surface finish. Yet these two properties determine whether an item is pleasant to handle, how much lubricant you need, and how much effort cleaning requires. This guide explains what to look for, so you don't have to make three bad purchases first.
Hardness: soft, semi-firm, or hard
Hardness largely depends on the material. Roughly, there are three groups:
Soft and flexible — TPE, jelly, and soft silicone. The material bends, conforms to shape, and feels warmer. Disadvantage: soft material is more porous and requires more attention when cleaning and drying.
Semi-firm — most silicone items. They do bend, but spring back to their original shape. This makes them easy to control without feeling hard.
Hard — glass and metal. No flexibility, but a smooth, seamless surface and noticeable weight. Consider a Glass Plug Clear for €19.95 or the Glass Dildo Black 17 cm, also €19.95.
Is no hardness mentioned? That's normal: a Shore value (the usual measure for rubber and silicone hardness) is rarely seen on a consumer page. In that case, rely on the material name and photos: an item that visibly bends in the product photo or has a suction cup base that gives way is soft to semi-firm. Glass and stainless steel are inherently hard.
Surface: smooth, ribbed, nubs, or beads
The surface is the second half of the story. You'll most often encounter four main forms.
A smooth, hard variant with a subtle texture is the Glass Dildo Plug Clear with Blue Ribbing for €19.95: the ribbing is integrated into the glass, so you get one seamless, easy-to-clean surface.
What surface means for your lubricant
The more texture, the more surface area — and the faster lubricant is absorbed or wiped away. For ribbed and textured items, expect to reapply lubricant more often than with a smooth model. Water-based lubricant is the safest standard choice, as it combines with all materials in this guide: silicone, TPE, glass, and metal. A 150 ml bottle like Water-based Lubricant 150 ml (€9.95) or the Lotus Flower Aqua Lubricant 150 ml (€4.15) is the logical staple for most people.
Silicone lubricant feels slicker for longer, but it's best not to combine it with silicone items without careful consideration: it can degrade the surface over time. This problem does not occur with glass and metal.
Cleaning: the difference is in the grooves
A smooth surface is rinsed, soaped, rinsed again, and dried. For ribs, nubs, and beads, that's not enough: lubricant remains in every transition. Take the time to go through the grooves with your fingers or a soft brush, and then dry completely — especially for soft material, as moisture left in a seam is the primary cause of musty odors.
Clean immediately after use, not the next morning.
Store separately; different soft materials can stick together.
Does the item have a motor, like the Remote Plug with 9 vibration settings (€39.95)? First, check what the manufacturer says about water resistance and keep the charging port dry.
How to choose in three steps
Work from general to specific: first material and hardness, then surface, then color and extras.
Choose the hardness. Do you want something flexible, or something that stays firm and has weight? If in doubt, semi-firm silicone is the safest middle ground.
Choose the surface. Start smooth. Texture is a preference, not an upgrade — you can always add a ribbed model later.
Hardness determines how steerable an item is, while the surface determines how much lubricant and cleaning work is involved. Smooth plus semi-firm is the most forgiving combination to start with; hard and seamless is the easiest to keep clean; heavily ribbed requires the most maintenance. Read the product page for the material mentioned, check the photos for texture, and factor in your lubricant and cleaner consumption into your budget.
