Plug sets, cockring sets, and kegel balls in 3-packs: when a set with graduated sizes is more economical than buying individual items, and what to consider regarding material, cleaning, and lubricant.
Many 18+ product pages offer a set of three in addition to individual items: three plugs in ascending sizes, three cock rings in different diameters, three Kegel balls with varying weights. The price of such a set is often close to that of two individual items. This raises a practical question: do you buy one item in the size you think is correct, or do you take the set and figure it out as you go?
The answer depends on one thing: do you already know which size or weight suits you? If not, a set is usually the cheapest way to find out. If you do know, then with a set you're paying for two items that will stay in the drawer. Below are the considerations, without further ado.
Why sets often come in three sizes
Sets with a size progression are not a marketing gimmick but follow the way people actually use these types of items: you start small and only move on when it feels comfortable. For anal items, this is the usual order, and manufacturers therefore often supply an S, M, and L version in one box.
For cock rings, the logic is different: it's not about progression but about finding the right fit. The correct diameter varies per person and is difficult to estimate beforehand. The Silicone Cock Ring Set of 3 (€9.95) gives you three sizes for approximately the price of one individual ring — for this type of item, a set is therefore almost always the sensible first purchase.
When buying individual items is cheaper
With Kegel balls, it's the other way around. There, it's not the size but the weight that's variable, and that weight is simply listed in the product data. If you know what you're looking for, you buy specifically.
If you already know that 60 grams is comfortable, one individual item for €10.00 is enough. If you don't know, the 3-pack costs €34.95 and you won't need a second order. Somewhere in between is the 2-pack Kegel balls with remote control and 10 functions (€24.95), where you get a version with two balls and a version with one ball in the same package.
Calculate the price per usable item, not per item
The temptation is to divide the set price by three. This is arithmetically correct but not practical, as you rarely use all three sizes equally often. It's better to calculate based on the number of items you will actually use.
Do you expect to use one size? Divide the set price by one. A set of €24.99 is then an expensive single item — unless you view the other two as the cost of experimenting.
Do you expect to progress? Then you'll use two or three, and the set is almost always more economical than individual purchases one after another, plus you save on shipping costs for a second order.
Are you buying for someone else? A set with a luxurious gift box, like the 3-pack Kegel balls above, gives the recipient choice without you having to guess a size.
Material and maintenance: sets require a little more discipline
With three items in your home instead of one, your maintenance routine changes. Three points to consider.
Clean what you haven't used as well. Items that have been in a box for months are often taken out thoughtlessly when you finally need them. Clean them before and after use, even if they seem unused. A Toy Cleaner Spray of 150 ml (€8.95) or the odorless Toy Cleaner of 120 ml (€7.95) is quicker than soap and water for this purpose.
Store them separately. Different materials can react with each other if they are stored against each other for a long time; the original packaging or separate bags prevent this. The box of a set is usually perfectly adequate for this, provided you store it dry.
Are all sizes listed? For a good set, the dimensions or weights are listed for each item. If it only says "S, M, L" without numbers, you don't know if the smallest size is actually small.
Is the material the same for each item? In mixed sets, sometimes one item is made of a different material, with different cleaning and lubricant requirements.
Is the base or end safely designed? For anal items, a wide base or suction cup is not an extra but the reason why this type of item looks the way it does. Check that all three sizes have that base, not just the smallest one.
In short
If you already know your size or weight, buy individual items — you won't pay for items you don't use. If you don't know, a set of three is usually cheaper than two consecutive orders, and you immediately have the progression at hand. And if you're buying for someone else, a set in a gift box is the safest choice, as the recipient can decide what fits.
