In a rented house or student room, you'll want to decorate the walls without drilling holes. This guide explains which fasteners work where, and which lightweight signs, clocks, and hooks you can use with them.

You have the key to a room or a rental apartment, and nothing is allowed on the walls. Or rather: something is allowed, but you don't want to leave a row of plaster stains at the final inspection that will cost you your deposit. At the same time, from September onwards, you spend more and more time indoors, and a bare wall with a single cable running along it quickly becomes tiresome.

You rarely solve this problem with a single product. It's about the combination: a fastening that suits your surface, and items light enough to be held by that fastening. Below you will find how to match the two.

First your surface, then your hook

Adhesive hooks almost never fail due to the hook itself. They fail due to the wall underneath. Coarse-grained wallpaper, spray paint, textured paint, and freshly painted walls: an adhesive strip adheres poorly to these, and then it detaches at the first temperature change — taking a piece of wallpaper with it.

Where adhesive hooks usually work well: smooth tiles, painted smooth stucco, glass, lacquered wood, plastic doors, and the side of a cabinet. First, degrease the spot with some rubbing alcohol or a little dish soap and let it dry completely. Then stick it on, press firmly, and don't hang anything on it for the first few hours.

For that job, Self-Adhesive Hooks 6x6 cm, 10 pieces (€5.95) are a logical starting point: you get ten at once, so you can work in the bathroom, kitchen, and hallway simultaneously. If you want something that also looks good in the hallway, the Stainless Steel Coat Hook Sticker Gold 4.5 x 4.5 cm (€4.95) is a neater option.

Always read the stated maximum weight on the packaging and do not exceed it. A hook that, according to the manufacturer, can handle a few kilos is not meant for a wet towel plus a bag plus a coat. It is better to distribute the weight over two hooks.

Choose things that are light, not things that are big

As soon as you work with adhesive fastenings, weight becomes the most important characteristic of everything you hang. A large wooden panel is out of the question; a set of small plates will hang for years.

A few examples that fall into that category:

Product Size Price
Gaming Door Signs, set of 4 set of 4 hanging signs € 2.95
Cork Pinboard LOVE 29 x 13 cm € 7.95
Men's Toilet Sign Black Gold 12 x 12 cm € 9.99
Women's Toilet Sign Black Gold 12 x 12 cm € 9.99
Metal Parking Sign Gay Parking Only 20 x 30 cm € 24.95

Metal signs are thin and surprisingly light for their size, and they fill an empty wall faster than a picture frame of the same size. There is also a Metal Sign in 2 models (€19.95) if you are looking for something more neutral.

One clock makes more difference than you think

A wall with only flat plates remains flat. What helps is one object with a different shape — usually a clock. Pay attention to the movement: a ticking movement in a small room or study nook will really get on your nerves on a quiet evening. The Canvas Wall Clock with silent movement (€19.95) has a canvas front and therefore a lower weight than a clock with glass and a metal rim.

Hang a clock at eye level or just above it, and not directly above a sofa where it visually competes with the sofa. Above a desk or next to a doorframe almost always works.

Light and ambiance without a hole in the ceiling

Autumn is precisely the time when you notice that a room only has one light source, usually in the middle of the ceiling. Extra light at eye level or low to the ground immediately makes a space more peaceful.

On the wall, this can be done with something like the Grundig Heart-shaped Light with 37 LEDs (40 x 42 cm, €19.95). On a cabinet or windowsill, separate lighting works just as well: a Glass Tealight Holder made of mirror glass (19 x 10.8 x 12 cm, €19.95) or a Metal Tray with magnetic candle holders (25 x 25 cm, €20.00) with which you bundle multiple candles in one place instead of spreading them across the room. For a child's room, a Nightlight Projector with 15 slides (€39.95) does the same job from a bedside table.

Vertical storage saves floor space

In a small room, the wall is also storage space. A Jewelry Rack with wooden base (27 x 7 x 31 cm, €20.00) stands on a cabinet and takes necklaces out of the drawer where they get tangled. A Cassette Tape Desk Organizer with tape dispenser (€30.00) does the same for pens and tape on your desk. And for those who want to keep something out of sight without sacrificing a drawer: a Fake Book with storage space (26.7 x 17 x 4.2 cm, €24.00) simply stands among the others in the bookshelf.

Inside the closet itself, thin hangers reclaim space. Hangers made of recycled material, 10 pieces cost €3.99, and a Multifunctional Foldable Hanger (€4.95) hangs multiple items one below the other in the space of one.

The hallway: where things really go wrong

The hallway is where coats end up on the floor and where the first wet shoes come in during November. Two adhesive hooks and a good mat largely solve this. A Semi-circular coconut doormat with latex backing (€40.00) keeps sand and moisture out before it reaches your floor — that saves more at the final inspection than an extra sign on the wall.

Short checklist before you start

  • First, check your rental agreement or house rules for what they say about drilling and sticking; if in doubt, ask your landlord by email, so you have it in writing.
  • Test in an inconspicuous spot whether your wall is smooth enough for an adhesive strip.
  • Degrease, stick, press firmly, and only load after a few hours.
  • Keep the weight low: preferably three small plates rather than one heavy panel.
  • Distribute heavier items over two hooks instead of one.
  • Keep the packaging with the stated maximum weight until you know everything stays up.

Start small: one hook in the hallway, one sign by the door, one light source that doesn't hang from the ceiling. That changes a room more than a whole afternoon of DIY.
