While a plug and a beaded cord may look similar in a product photo, they differ in shape, sizing, base, and cleaning. A business comparison with the dimensions that truly matter.

In the anal collection, there are two types of products that don't look very different in a product photo: a plug and a string of beads. In use, they are two very different things, with different sizing, a different type of base, and a different cleaning method. Those who order based on the picture often buy the wrong item. Below are the key differences.

Shape: a single point versus a series

A butt plug has one wide point and stays in place after insertion. Its shape is intentionally tapered: it widens to its broadest point and then sharply narrows to a slim neck. This neck is what keeps it in place.

Anal beads are a series of spheres on a flexible string, each separated by a thinner section. They are not meant to stay still; the idea is precisely the progression. This makes them longer and more flexible than a plug. The Anal Beads Runner in black silicone is 18.5 cm long and costs €14.95; the Anal Beads Bendy Twist is longer at 22.5 cm, for €14.99. In jelly, it goes even further: the Anal Beads Jelly in blue measures 29 cm and costs €14.95, just like the pink version of 29 cm.

That length says little about how far something goes in: with beads, you determine that yourself, bead by bead. With a plug, the insertable length is fixed.

Sizing: look at the diameter, not the length

For plugs, the diameter at the widest point is the number that counts. An Anal Plug Rocket Anchor of 8.5 cm (€9.95) is a different product than the Rocket Drill Large of 9.5 x 5.2 cm (€14.99) or the Rocket Drill Mega of 11.4 x 6.2 cm (€17.99), and that difference lies in the second measurement. Two products of the same length can differ by almost a centimeter in diameter.

With beads, you look at the largest bead and the difference between the beads themselves. A series where each bead is slightly larger progresses more gradually than a series where they are all the same size.

If the diameter is not in the title or description? Ask for it before ordering. Guessing based on a photo doesn't work, because product photos are rarely to scale.

The base: the most important part

This is the safety aspect of the choice, and there's little to dispute: anything used anally needs a base that is wider than the widest part of the product. A plug without a clear base plate or ring does not belong in this category.

Material: silicone, jelly, and metal

Silicone is the most commonly used material in this category. It is non-porous, so easy to clean, and it flexes with body heat. Jelly is softer and more flexible, but more porous; jelly products generally last less long and are harder to clean thoroughly. Metal is hard, heavy, and takes on temperature—a very different use, and not the material to start with.

What you take away from this: silicone is the safe standard choice, jelly is the cheaper option which you accept will be replaced sooner, and metal is a conscious choice for weight and hardness.

Lubricant: which combinations are possible and which are not

Anal use requires more and thicker lubricant than other applications, as there is no natural lubrication. Therefore, it's better to choose a gel than a thin liquid, and reapply in between instead of using a lot at once.

The Lotus Flower anal lubricant gel of 150 ml costs €7.95 and is thicker than a regular water-based one. If you want one bottle for general use, the Lotus Flower Aqua water-based of 150 ml (€4.15) is the cheapest way to apply generously. The KP Anal Relax Gel of 50 ml (€12.95) is a smaller bottle in the same category.

The rule that really matters: you don't combine silicone lubricant with silicone toys. The two react with each other, and the surface of your plug or beads will become sticky and dull. Water-based can always be used, on any material. If you're unsure what you have at home, check the ingredients label.

Preparation and cleaning

This is where plugs and beads truly differ. A smooth silicone plug can be cleaned in half a minute with warm water and soap or a toy cleaner. Beads have constrictions between each sphere and, in some designs, a seam along the string. Everything can get stuck there. Take your time, rinse, and let them dry completely before storing them—moisture in a closed box is the most common reason an item starts to smell.

For those who want to rinse beforehand, anal douches are available in the assortment: the Anal Douche of 220 ml costs €9.95 and the Rocket Anal Douche XL of 330 ml €17.95. Use lukewarm water, not too much and not too often; it's an aid, not a daily routine.

Buying a set or individual items

Those new to this category often buy one item and find that the size is not right. A set with graduated sizes solves this problem. The Anal starter set with 3 anal plugs in black costs €14.95, and the starter set with 4 butt plugs in 4 sizes also costs €14.95. For that price, you have multiple diameters at home and don't have to guess.

If you're looking for something with controls, the Remote Plug with app control and 9 vibration modes (€39.95) is a step further—only choose this once you know what size suits you, as technology doesn't change the sizing.

The complete range is available in Anal Sex Toys, split into Butt Plugs and Anal Beads, with lubricant in the Lubricant collection. All orders are shipped in neutral packaging.
