Choosing an anal vibrator: shape, settings, battery, and maintenance

Shape, size, motor, battery, and material at a glance — plus what you need for preparation and cleaning.
An anal plug that doesn't vibrate is one thing – an anal vibrator is another. Vibration feels different, requires a different shape, different batteries, and different hygiene. This buying guide helps you choose without marketing jargon: which shape suits which level, which settings actually matter, and what to look for in terms of battery and material.
Shape and Size: Start Small, Build Up
The rule of thumb for anal toys is: start smaller than you think. For beginners, a diameter of 2.5 to 3 cm at the widest point is sufficient. The Prostate Anal Plug 12.5 × 2.5 cm (€9.95) has that size and a reinforced base – a classic entry-level size, albeit without vibration.
For a true anal vibrator, consider three shapes:
Cylindrical or tapered – narrow at the tip, wider in the middle. Easy to insert, stays in place well.
Choose the shape according to its purpose: targeted prostate stimulation requires a curved model, while general stimulation works with all three. With every shape, pay attention to a reinforced, wide base or pull cord. Without that base, the toy can slide past the point where you can no longer retrieve it without help – that's the most important safety rule for anything anal.
Settings and Motor: How Many Functions Do You Really Need?
Manufacturers love to advertise "10 settings" or "36 functions." In practice, most people use three to five. What you're looking for:
Strong low setting – a deep, rumbly vibration at low speed is more pleasant than a high, rattling one. Look for words like "rumbly" or "deep" in reviews.
Constant speeds – at least three increasing speeds.
Patterns (pulse, wave, escalation) – fun to try, but rarely essential.
A model with 7 settings that is already powerful on the lowest setting is better than a model with 20 settings that only does something at setting 15. For couples or remote use, a remote control or app connection is valuable. The Remote Plug App Controlled 9 Vibration Settings (€39.95) has this combination.
Battery: USB Rechargeable or Disposable Cells?
Two camps, and you'll notice the difference especially with intensive use.
Type
Advantage
Disadvantage
USB rechargeable
Stronger motor, no battery costs, usually waterproof
If battery dies at an inconvenient moment, you're done
Separate AA/AAA
Quick change, always usable provided you have stock
Usually less power, risk of leakage
Built-in non-rechargeable
Disposable – low threshold
Total lifespan a few hours
For a toy you use once a month, a USB rechargeable model is fine. For daily or intensive use: look at the specified playtime (good models achieve 60 to 120 minutes on one charge) and whether the model trickle charges in standby. Models with a lock mode or travel lock are handy if you take the toy in a bag – otherwise, it'll be vibrating at full power in your suitcase.
Material and Waterproofing
Only two materials are what you're looking for for anal use:
Medical silicone – skin-friendly, warms up, smooth to use. Use only water-based lubricant; silicone lubricant can damage silicone toys.
Stainless steel or ABS plastic with a soft coating – hard, smooth, heavier, quick to clean. Combines with any type of lubricant.
Avoid porous rubbers and jelly-like materials anally – they cannot be completely rid of bacterial growth during cleaning. On the product page, look for terms like body safe, medical grade silicone, phthalate-free. For the meaning of these terms: see our separate guide on material terms.
Waterproofing is different from splash-proofing: IPX7 can be submerged, IPX4 can only be rinsed off. For use in the bath or shower, choose IPX7 or higher, and make sure the charging port has a cap that closes securely.
Preparation and Maintenance
Anal play requires a bit more preparation than a vibrator you only use externally.
Anal cleansing – a small anal douche like the Rocket Douche 220 ml (€9.95) is enough for shallow stimulation. Two to three rinses with lukewarm water are usually sufficient.
Lubricant – anally, the bowel itself does not produce lubricant, so you will need something. A thicker water-based anal lubricant works well with silicone toys. With metal toys, you can use silicone lubricant, which lasts longer.
Build up gradually – never start with the largest size. Five minutes with a finger or small plug makes insertion more pleasant.
After use: lukewarm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, then let it dry completely before storing. Silicone toys collect dust; store them in a soft pouch or separate plastic box, not loosely against other silicone toys as they can react with each other.
When to Replace?
A good anal toy lasts for years. You replace it if you see visible cracks in the silicone, if the motor runs irregularly, or if the battery drains quickly and no longer fully charges. A defective charging port usually means the end – water damage is then likely. See also our guide on wear and proper disposal.
