A blindfold that lets light through or a mask that starts to pinch after half an hour: the differences lie in material, closure, and fit. This buying guide compares visibility, comfort, sizing, and maintenance.

A blindfold from a budget set sometimes costs less than three euros, and usually, within ten minutes, you notice the difference. The thin elastic cuts behind your ears, a streak of light seeps in along your nose, and after one wash, the edge hangs limp in your hand. A blindfold or mask is not a complicated product, but there are a few features that determine whether you use it for one evening or three years: how much light it blocks, where it applies pressure, and whether you can get it clean.

Below, we separate the categories and go through the points you should pay attention to before ordering.

Three categories that are often intertwined

In the webshop, they are grouped together, but they serve different purposes:

  • Eye mask or blindfold — covers only the eyes, rests on the eye sockets and the bridge of the nose. Intended to obscure vision. A satin eye mask (€ 2.95) is the simplest example: folded fabric with elastic.
  • Decorative or face mask — covers (a part of) the face, but leaves the eyes free. A Venetian mask (€ 5.95) changes how you look, not what you see.
  • Hood mask — encloses the entire head, for example, a neoprene mask with a removable muzzle (€ 49.95). Here, breathing, warmth, and hearing play a role.

Anyone looking for a blindfold who orders an eye mask with open eyeholes will be disappointed. So always read whether the eyes are covered or cut out — this is usually stated in the product description and not always visible in the photo.

How much light does a blindfold truly let through?

No blindfold in this price range is one hundred percent light-proof, nor does it need to be. The difference lies in two things: the thickness of the material and the shape along the nose.

A single layer of thin satin lets an orange glow through in bright light. Two layers with an interlining do not. More important is the nose bridge: with a straight-cut mask, a small triangle remains open at the bottom through which you can look down. Models with a cutout or a slight curve in the nose line fit better there. If you really want it dark, it helps more to dim the lights in the room than to buy a more expensive mask.

Material: satin, faux leather, and neoprene

Material Feel Care Note
Satin / polyester Smooth, light, cool Hand wash, air dry Fraying with cheap finishing; do not iron on high heat
Faux leather (PU) Stiffer, fits snugly Damp cloth, then wipe dry Do not immerse in water; can discolor light textiles
Neoprene Springy, retains warmth Lukewarm water with mild soap, dry flat Gets warm; do not dry in the sun or on the heater
Hard plastic (decorative mask) Stiff, touches the face at a few points Wipe with a cloth Edges can feel sharp; check the inside

Satin is the most forgiving choice to start with. The red satin eye mask (€ 14.95) is a heavier version, and the eye mask with reversible sequins (€ 5.95) shows that a blindfold can also simply be a party accessory.

Fit: elastic, ribbon or buckle

The closure determines comfort more than the material.

  • Narrow elastic — cheap and quick to put on, but puts point pressure behind the ears. Fine for short use.
  • Wide or double elastic — distributes pressure over a larger area and slides up less.
  • Ribbon or lace — you determine the tension yourself, and nothing is behind your ears. Disadvantage: you need two hands, and it gets caught in long hair. The Love Mask in black (€ 14.95) falls into this category.
  • Buckle or Velcro — adjustable and repeatable: set it correctly once, and you don't have to fiddle with it anymore. See the BDSM mask in black (€ 49.95).

Hair, earrings, and glasses

Three practical things rarely mentioned in a product description. Long hair: put the mask on before you tie your hair back, otherwise the elastic will go straight through it. Earrings with a large clasp and an elastic behind the ear don't go well together; choose a model with a ribbon instead. And if you wear glasses, a blindfold with a pronounced nose cutout is more comfortable, as otherwise the spectacle frames will leave a mark.

Masks that cover the face: breathing, vision and sound

With a hood mask, more changes than just your appearance. Neoprene insulates, so it gets warmer and clammy inside. Therefore, check if the model has removable or open parts, such as the neoprene version with a removable muzzle (€ 49.95) or the lighter Puppy Play mask in black (€ 14.95).

Your hearing also changes: fabric and foam over the ears dampen sound. So, agree beforehand how you will make it clear that the mask needs to come off, without relying on talking – for example, with a pre-arranged gesture or something you hold in your hand and release. Always put on a buckled mask so that you can unfasten it with one hand.

If you want the effect without covering your entire head, a half mask is a compromise. The luxury rabbit mask in black (€ 12.00), the luxury cat mask (€ 10.00), and the rabbit mask in five colors (€ 19.95) leave the mouth and nose free.

Cleaning and storage

A mask or blindfold touches your face, and thus makeup, skin oils, and hair products. This requires a bit more than just putting it away.

  1. Wipe clean after use. Textiles: let it air dry first, don't put it in a drawer immediately. Faux leather and neoprene: a damp cloth and then wipe dry.
  2. Wash periodically. Satin by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild soap. Do not wring, but press out in a towel. Neoprene only with lukewarm water; hot water affects the glued seams.
  3. Store flat and dry. A mask that is folded in a bag will retain the crease. Place decorative masks with the concave side up so that the shape does not sag.
  4. Do not share without an intermediate step. If someone else uses the same mask, wash it in between. For a blindfold, that's simple; for neoprene, it means extra drying time, so keep that in mind if you want to use it two evenings in a row.

Replace a blindfold if the elastic loses its tension, if the seam comes undone, or if the inside no longer smells fresh after washing. For thin satin, this often happens within a year; for a stitched version with a buckle, it takes much longer.

Where do you start?

If you want to try it out first, buy a simple satin blindfold and see if you like it. If you do, the logical next step is a model with an adjustable closure: that's the point where most people notice an increase in comfort. A mask that covers the entire head is a separate category – you buy that because you want the look, not because you're looking for a better blindfold.

All models are grouped together in Erotic Masks; related items can be found in BDSM and in the broader Erotic assortment.
