Choker, collar, or harness: choosing the right size, material, and clasp

A choker that chokes or a clasp you can't easily open: you only notice that at the party. Here's how to choose by neck circumference, material, and clasp.
You usually buy a choker based on the picture: it looks good in the photo, it matches the outfit, that's it. Two hours later at the party, you realize what you should have paid attention to. It keeps turning to the front because the clasp is too heavy. Or it's just too tight, and you can't undo the clasp with one hand.
These are not matters of taste but measurable things: neck circumference, band width, weight, and clasp type. Below, we list them so you can estimate beforehand if a model suits you. This article is intended for adults and focuses on the practical side: fit, material, and maintenance.
Choker, collar, harness: what's the difference?
The three terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things.
A choker lies snugly against the neck and is usually narrow — from a thin strap to about two centimeters wide. It is primarily a piece of jewelry.
A collar is generally wider and more robust, often made of leather or faux leather, and more frequently features a buckle or a ring.
A harness extends over the shoulders or torso and is worn over or under clothing. Here, not only the neck size but also the length across the chest and back matters.
In practice, there's a lot of overlap. A model like the Choker Collar Pink Crystals - 2 cm (€19.95) falls between both categories in terms of width. Therefore, it's better to look at the features than the word in the title.
Size: measure your neck before ordering
The most common mistake is ordering by feel. Grab a tape measure or a piece of string and measure your neck circumference where you want to wear the jewelry — which is higher for a choker than for a necklace. Write down that measurement and add one and a half to two centimeters for room to move.
Then compare that result with the specified length. Pay attention to what that length means: for a closed model, it's the circumference; for an adjustable model, it's usually the maximum length. The Heart-shaped Choker with Studs - 40cm (€14.95) and the Leather Choker with 3 Hearts - Adjustable 40 cm (€12.95) both state 40 cm, but the second explicitly mentions that it is adjustable.
If your size is between two options, choose the adjustable model. A longer necklace like the Luxury Choker Silver - 65 cm (€25.00) or the Colorful Link Chain - 56cm - 4 Colors (€14.95) wears looser and hangs lower — that's a different effect, not a larger choker.
Material: what you notice it on
Material determines how a band feels, how it ages, and how you clean it.
Material
Characteristics
Consideration
Leather
Sturdy, becomes more supple with wear, holds shape
Not machine washable; let moisture dry at room temperature
Faux Leather
Lighter and cheaper, often more uniform in color
The coating can crack with sharp folds
Metal (chain, ring, studs)
Heavier, fits tighter, striking
Weight can cause the band to tip forward
Textile and velvet
Soft on the skin, light
Stretches and absorbs odor and makeup
If you wear a piece of jewelry for a long time, weight is more important than you think. A model with a lot of metal, such as the Punk Spike Choker - Leather Chain with Spikes (€14.95) or the Choker Punk Style - 4 colors (€19.95), feels fine for a night out but is different from a light band you can wear all day.
If you have sensitive skin or react to certain metals, choose a model where the metal does not rest permanently against the skin — meaning with the studs or spikes on the outside and a leather or textile band in between.
Clasp: how quickly can you get it off?
This is the point most often overlooked. There are roughly three types:
Carabiner clasp with extension chain. Adjustable in steps, easy to put on yourself, but sometimes difficult with one hand behind your neck.
Buckle. Finer adjustment and sturdier, but often requires two hands or a mirror.
Fixed or magnetic clasp. Quick to put on and take off, less adjustable.
A few practical rules, no matter which model you choose:
A band should not constrict. You should be able to comfortably slide two fingers underneath it.
Choose a clasp that you can quickly open yourself, even in the dark or with one hand.
Take off a collar or harness before sleeping or exercising.
Never pull on a band around someone's neck, and do not attach anything that could cause tension.
If something feels tight, tingly, or uncomfortable: just take it off. A piece of jewelry should not leave pressure marks.
The same principle applies to a harness, but across more points. The Leather BDSM Harness with Chain - Adjustable (€29.95) is adjustable; adjust it carefully at home before taking it out, so you don't end up fiddling with straps on the spot.
Maintenance and storage
Sweat, perfume, and makeup are the biggest enemies of a collar. After wearing, wipe leather and faux leather with a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry, not on the heater. Polish metal parts dry to prevent tarnish.
Store bands flat or hanging instead of rolled up: faux leather can develop cracks in sharp folds over time. Store pieces with stones or crystals, such as the Choker Red with Stones - 2 cm, adjustable (€19.95), separately from sharp jewelry so nothing rubs against them. A chain with a pendant like the Sofia Necklace - BDSM Pendant Silver-colored (€24.95) is best hung, as this prevents knots.
In short
First, measure your neck. Then choose based on width and weight, as this determines how long you can comfortably wear something. Finally, check the clasp: it must be secure and quick to release. Only when these three are right, then the question is which model you like best.
