pH-neutral, vegan or fragranced: how to read the label on lubricants and intimate care products

Neutral, water-based, pH-neutral, vegan, concentrate: what those indications on the packaging mean and how to fairly compare two bottles before ordering.

Ten bottles in a row, all roughly the same size, all priced between four and fifteen euros. The difference lies in a handful of words on the label: neutral, water-based, pH-neutral, vegan, unscented, flavored, concentrate. These words mean something, but not always what you think — and sometimes they say more about the packaging than about the contents.

This buying guide reviews the most common labels you'll encounter in the range of lubricants, massage products, and intimate care, and how they can practically help you choose. This is not advice on what's good for you — that's a conversation for a doctor or pharmacist — but an explanation of what's on the packaging and how to fairly compare two products.

The basics: what it's based on

The first word you look at is the base. Water-based, silicone-based, or oil-based determines how a product feels, how you clean it, and what materials it can be used with. Water-based products are the most numerous in the assortment and can be washed off with water; this is also why they are often sold as "neutral" or "classic".

Examples where the base is in the title, so you don't have to guess: Peep Pleasure Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 7.95), Nyoy Natural Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 4.00), and Water-Based Lubricant 150 ml (€ 9.95). If the base isn't in the title, it's almost always in the product description or on the packaging photo. If you can't find it anywhere, consider that missing information, not a detail.

"Neutral", "fragranced" and flavor variants

"Neutral" on a label usually means: no added scent, color, or taste. This is different from "natural" or "pure", as these are not protected terms. If you're looking for something unscented, look for products that explicitly state this, such as Intimate Classic Lubricant Neutral 100 ml (€ 10.00) or Toy Cleaner Unscented 120 ml (€ 7.95).

On the other hand are the flavored or scented variants: Nyoy Strawberry Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 4.00), Vanilla Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 9.95), or Cobeco Cannabis Lubricant 100 ml (€ 9.95), where "cannabis" refers to the flavor and scent profile. Two practical points: a flavored variant is almost always sweeter in scent than you expect, and scents linger longer in textiles than in your memory. If you don't want to find it in your bedding, choose neutral.

pH-neutral and other technical designations

pH-neutral means that the acidity of the product is around the neutral value. Manufacturers primarily use the term for washing and care products, such as the Intimate Wash Gel 400 ml, pH-neutral (€ 7.95). What the manufacturer specifically means and which value has been maintained can be found on the packaging or in the product information; the term itself says nothing about suitability for your situation. If you're in doubt whether you can use something, the question is for your general practitioner or pharmacist, not for a product page.

You will also encounter designations such as "warming" — for example, Warming Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 4.00) — or combination products such as the Nyoy 2-in-1 Massage and Water-Based Lubricant 100 ml (€ 4.00). With a 2-in-1 product, it's worth checking whether the product is intended for both applications or primarily for one; that saves disappointment.

Vegan, natural, and what a claim is and isn't

"Vegan" is a claim about the composition: no ingredients of animal origin have been used. The Cobeco Vegan Natural Lubricant 100 ml (€ 9.95) is an example of this. "Natural," "organic," and "pure" are more loosely defined and mean something different for each brand. Therefore, treat them as an indication, not a guarantee, and check the ingredient list on the packaging to be sure.

The same applies to massage products. For Coconut Massage Oil 250 ml (€ 14.95) or Eucalyptus Massage Oil 250 ml (€ 14.95), the name refers to the scent profile; the basic ingredient used can be found in the description. If you want to try out which scent you like before buying a large bottle, the Massage Oil Set Almond, Coconut, and Eucalyptus, 3 x 100 ml (€ 19.95) is the logical next step for that.

Content, format, and concentrate

The content in milliliters is the only way to compare prices fairly. A 100 ml bottle for €4.00 is cheaper per milliliter than a 100 ml bottle for €9.95 – that's trivial – but it becomes more interesting when sizes differ. Therefore, always convert to price per 100 ml before calling something "cheap" or "expensive."

Two special formats to be aware of. Concentrate and powder: Massage powder for 7.5 liters of massage gel (€ 12.95) and Massage Gel Powder Shake It Up, 6 x 5 grams (€ 9.95) are mixed with water yourself. This is economical per liter and light for shipping, but you mix it in the quantity stated on the packaging and use it within the indicated period – you cannot leave it for months like a closed bottle. Sachets: Lubricant Sachets of 7 ml, 120 pieces (€ 59.95) are single-use portions; handy for on the go, for a goodie bag, or for a shop, less logical for home use.

Cleaning and storage

With toy cleaners, you'll find the same dichotomy: unscented or fragranced, and spray bottle or cap. The Toy Cleaner Spray 150 ml Clean & Play (€ 8.95) dispenses with an atomizer, which wastes less than pouring. If you're transferring something to a smaller bottle for travel, use packaging designed for that purpose: a Refillable Bottle of 120 ml costs € 2.99 and an Amber Glass Spray Bottle 50 ml costs € 7.95. Write down what's inside and when you transferred it; an unlabeled bottle in a drawer will be a mystery in three months.

Three checks before ordering

  1. Base: Is it water-based, silicone-based, or oil-based? If not, find out before ordering.
  2. Scent: Neutral or fragranced? If in doubt, neutral is the safer choice — you can't remove a scent once it's there.
  3. Content: How many milliliters or grams, and what is the price per 100 ml? Only then compare.

Seeing everything at a glance helps with comparison: the Lubricant collection is sorted together, cleaners can be found under Toy Cleaners, care under Intimate Hygiene, and the broader assortment at the Erotic Drugstore.
