Movie night at home: popcorn, snacks, and drinks that you prepare beforehand

It's getting dark early again, so movie night is back on the agenda. What do you prepare so you don't have to go to the kitchen halfway through, and how much do you need for four or eight people?
The credits of the last movie aren't even over yet and someone is already heading to the kitchen. Another round of popcorn, another glass, and by the time everyone is seated, the opening scene is over. A movie night hinges on what you've laid out on the table before it begins.
Now that evenings are getting darker earlier, this happens more often. Below is a practical list: what to prepare, in what quantities, and where things usually go wrong.
Popcorn: Pop your own or pre-made
Popping your own takes ten minutes and yields the most popcorn per euro. Downside: it happens in rounds, and the last round is ready when the movie has already started. Pre-made is more expensive per gram but is on the table within a minute. A 100-gram bag of Jimmy's Popcorn Sweet costs €4.95 and is enough for two to three people who really dig in.
What you want in both cases: a bowl everyone can reach, instead of four small dishes you constantly have to refill. A popcorn bucket for €7.95 can be placed in the middle of the coffee table and immediately reduces spills: people extend their arm instead of balancing their bowl on the armrest.
What else is on the table
Popcorn alone gets boring after an hour. It works better if you offer two or three types with a clear difference in texture: something crunchy, something soft, and something sweet to suck on.
Don't know the company well? Then choose at least one item without chocolate. Chocolate melts in warm hands, and on a sofa with light upholstery, you'll notice it the next morning.
Cups and glasses: choose for spill-resistance
A tall, narrow glass on a coffee table or armrest is a risk. For a movie night, a cup with a lid works better than a glass. A hard PVC sports and coffee cup with 500 ml capacity costs €9.95 and can be knocked over without consequences. For a larger group, 150 ml coffee cups in a pack of 100 for €14.95 are the easy route: no washing up afterward.
If you want to put something out that lasts all evening without anyone having to get up, a 2-liter water bottle with time markings for €24.95 is a practical solution. And a 750 ml milk cup with lid for €9.95 is perfect for pouring lemonade or iced tea without a carton on the table.
How much should you prepare?
A simple rule of thumb for an evening with two movies or three episodes:
Number of people
Popcorn
Sweets or snacks
Drinks
2 to 3
1 bag or 1 round of self-popped
2 small types
1.5 liters
4 to 6
2 bags or 2 rounds
3 types
3 liters
7 to 8
3 bags and a large bowl
3 types, generously purchased
4 to 5 liters
Any leftover packaged candy simply goes back into the cupboard. Open bags are best stored airtight: a storage jar with a lid for €9.95 prevents popcorn from being stale the next day.
Sound, lighting, and the break
If you're watching on a laptop or tablet, the sound is usually the weak link. A stereo speaker with phone holder, USB and AUX for €14.95 solves this without hassle: plug in the cable and you're good to go. Position the screen so no one is looking towards a window and turn on lights behind the viewers instead of above them.
If you want to put something out that's still fun for the next movie night, a candy machine is a good bet. The red gumball machine costs €14.95, and the smaller mini version with gumballs €12.95. Kids find it special, adults can't resist it, and it doesn't empty itself like a bowl.
In short: set everything up before you press play, choose spill-proof cups, and vary the texture of your sweets. For your next evening, browse through sweets, food & drinks, cups and glasses, and games. Questions about stock or delivery time for a larger order? Feel free to email info@verpakkingdeals.nl.
