One size, polyester, and a joke that lasts one evening. That's how you judge funny underwear and clothing gifts based on size, material, and the likelihood they'll actually be worn.
It almost always makes an appearance at a bachelor party or when drawing names for a gift exchange: funny underwear. The laughter lasts ten seconds, and then the item sits at the back of a drawer for three years. That's a waste of money, but it doesn't have to be that way. The difference between a gift that gets put away and a gift that gets worn lies in three practical things: the size, the material, and whether someone can actually wear it anywhere.
One size: what it means in practice
Almost all funny briefs, hats, and accessories list "one size". This is not a clothing size but a range of stretch: the elastic in the waistband or back strap accommodates several sizes. In practice, this usually means something in the range of approximately size M to L; above that, the band will be tight, and below that, it won't stay on.
If you know the recipient is clearly smaller or larger than average, it's better to choose something without a waistband. Socks, an apron, and a cap work over a much wider size range than briefs. If you do choose one-size underwear, base your decision on waist circumference and not the clothing size someone wears in pants — these two rarely align for these types of items.
Party items in this price range are almost always made of polyester or a polyester-elastane blend. This has pros and cons you should know beforehand. The material is lightweight, hardly wrinkles, and dries quickly, but it breathes less well than cotton and cannot withstand high temperatures. Wash it at a low temperature, inside out, and preferably in a laundry bag, so that elastic and appliqués remain intact. Do not tumble dry: elastane loses its stretch with heat and comes out limp.
Does it have a sound module, plush, or an embossed print? Then hand washing is the safer choice. And pay attention to the first wash with bright colors: red and neon often bleed with this type of textile. Wash such items separately the first time.
When such a gift works, and when it doesn't
A joke lands in the right context. It goes wrong when the recipient doesn't choose the package themselves when opening it. A few guidelines that work well in practice:

That last point is the most important. A gift about how someone looks is rarely worn. A gift about a shared joke is.
Alternatives that are used more often
Do you want the wink, but something that lasts longer than one evening? Choose something that has a function. Socks are worn, an apron is used, a hat goes outside.
If you're looking for something for a themed party instead of something to wear under clothing, a set with ears and a tail or a cap is often a better investment: it will come out again for Carnival and Halloween, whereas briefs won't.
Packaging and shipping: keep it neutral
These types of items are often delivered to an address other than the buyer's: to the party organizer, at the office, or to neighbors. Three practical points:
Send it in a neutral box or letterbox package without text or images on the outside. Textiles are light and flat, so in many cases, it fits in a letterbox packaging.
Pack the item in a sealed bag or small box inside the main box, so it's not immediately visible if someone else opens the package.
Do not list the gift as a separate item on a packing slip with a full product name if the recipient is not the one receiving the gift.
Keep the item in its original packaging until the moment of gifting. Polyester with a print stays nicest if it hasn't been folded in a bag for weeks.
