What material should you choose for fun tableware, what's dishwasher-safe, and what's truly single-use? A practical guide to ceramics, glass, silicone, and plastic.

The funny glass from the last bachelor party is still there. The print is half-faded, the bottom has become dull, and no one picks it up anymore. This is rarely due to the quality of the glass itself — usually, it's just been washed too hot ten or so times. Funny tableware is often bought for one evening, but most items can last for years if you pay attention to the material when purchasing and then know how to clean it.

This guide covers the practical side: which material to choose for what, what can and cannot go in the dishwasher, what you can use with food and drinks, and which items are truly single-use. This saves money and prevents disappointment halfway through the party.

Four Materials, Four Instruction Manuals

Almost everything in this assortment falls into one of four groups. They behave completely differently once heat, grease, or detergent are involved.

Material Typical for Strong in Note
Ceramic / porcelain Mugs, milk jugs, salt and pepper shakers Heat, sturdiness, longevity Breaks if dropped; print may wear off
Glass Beer and shot glasses, carafes Neutral taste, easy to clean Thin walls and narrow necks
Silicone Ice and baking molds Flexible, releases easily, cold and hot Absorbs odors and grease
Plastic (PVC, PP) Straws, stirrers, picks, cutlery Light, inexpensive, unbreakable Deforms with heat; often intended for short-term use

The rule of thumb: the harder and smoother the material, the longer it lasts and the easier it is to clean. A porcelain mug (€ 7.95) will survive hundreds of washes; a set of plastic stirrers (€ 3.00) is made for one evening.

What can go in the dishwasher?

This is the question that most often goes wrong. The dishwasher not only washes with soap, it washes with a lot of heat — and it is precisely this heat that destroys prints and thin plastics.

  • Glass and porcelain without print: dishwasher is fine. Place glasses separately; glasses clinking together can develop small cracks that you only see when something is poured into them.
  • Everything with a print or design: wash by hand, lukewarm water, soft cloth. Prints on ceramics and glass are a layer that dulls and then flakes off with repeated hot washes. A mug washed by hand will still look new after two years.
  • Silicone: usually dishwasher safe, but place it on the top rack and never against the heating element. Grease residues tend to stick to silicone; rinsing with hot water and detergent once works better than a long machine cycle.
  • Thin plastic and anything glued: hand wash, cold to lukewarm. Straws, picks, and cutlery with glued-on figures will come out of the machine bent or loose.

Are you unsure? Wash the first item by hand and see how it reacts. With a set of six glasses, that's a cheap test.

Food and Drink: What to Look Out For

Not every party item is meant for eating or drinking. The distinction is usually simple: anything that directly holds food or drink should be smooth, uninterrupted, and easy to clean. Think of the set of 6 shot glasses of 60 ml (€ 3.00), the 500 ml beer glass (€ 7.95) or the 320 ml ceramic milk jug (€ 3.95).

For items with a lot of relief, seams, or cavities, it's different. A set of 6 cutlery items (€ 4.95) or the ceramic salt and pepper shakers (€ 12.95) have corners where residues can get stuck. Wipe them immediately after use, let them dry completely before storing them, and do not store them damp in a closed box.

Molds are a separate category. The silicone ice and baking mold 18 x 14 cm (€ 5.95) and the 4-piece ice shot glass mold (€ 8.95) are often used interchangeably for sweet and savory. Silicone retains odor, so wash it in between with hot water and a drop of dish soap, and if possible, use one mold for sweet and one for everything else.

Single-use or reusable: calculate it yourself

For a party of thirty guests, you don't have to buy everything reusable. But it pays to know what choice you're making.

Item Price Realistic use
Paper straws pastel 220 x 6 mm, 10 pieces € 1.95 Single-use
Straws set of 10 € 7.95 Single-use to a few times
Picks, 6 pieces € 7.95 A few times, rinse after use
Bottle opener € 9.95 Years
Bottle stopper, set of 2 € 7.95 Years

Paper straws are cheap enough to buy per party at €1.95 for ten. An opener or stopper is bought once and then used repeatedly – so a higher price per item is not an issue.

Storage between two parties

Most damage occurs not during the party, but in the cupboard afterwards. Three things that make a difference:

  1. Store dry. Glass and ceramics that are put away damp in a closed box will get white stains or a musty smell. Leave everything on the counter overnight.
  2. Separate hard from soft. Don't place glasses loosely among cutlery and openers. A cracked glass is often only noticed when you pour something into it.
  3. Keep together. One box per occasion works better than everything spread across three cupboards. A set of 10 mini funnels (€ 9.95) or loose picks will otherwise certainly disappear.

If you're cooking yourself during the party, a kitchen apron (€ 14.95, available in 2 models) is a practical addition: wash it at the temperature indicated on the label and turn it inside out if it has a print.

Briefly summarized

  • Glass and porcelain without print can go in the dishwasher; anything with a print cannot.
  • Silicone retains odor: rinse with hot water beforehand and keep separate for sweet and savory.
  • Thin plastic is made for short-term use — expect it to be used up after one or two parties.
  • Openers, stoppers, and glasses are bought once; straws and picks per occasion.
  • Storing everything dry and separated saves more than any cleaning agent.
