Shipping from the kitchen table: a packing station that's up and gone in five minutes

No warehouse, but still getting orders: here's how to set up a packing station that fits on your dining table, can be assembled in five minutes, and put away just as quickly.
The table where you eat at six o'clock is your packing table at four o'clock. This works fine until you have seven orders at once, the tape roll is under the couch, and the utility knife is nowhere to be found. Anyone shipping items alongside a job, studies, or family rarely has a warehouse. What you can have, however, is a packing corner that sets up in five minutes and disappears again in five minutes.
This article is about that minimal setup: what to buy, where to store it, and how to prevent your living room from slowly turning into a shipping department.
Limit the number of sizes, not the number of packages
Space constraints are rarely solved by smarter stacking. You solve them by bringing fewer different things into your home. Two box sizes that you almost always use take up less space than six sizes that you sometimes use — and you have to think less with each order.
If you mainly ship soft or small items, you can supplement these two sizes with bubble envelopes. The metallic bubble envelopes 22 x 17 cm cost €0.90 each and the larger version of 33 x 23 cm costs €0.80. Please note: the maximum dimensions for letterbox mail differ per carrier and change occasionally, so check the current sizes with the carrier you use before ordering a large bundle.
For opening your own purchase boxes and trimming foil, utility knives, 3 pieces for €1.95 are sufficient. If you ship more, a set of 8 utility knives for €4.95 is more practical: then there's always one where you need it.
You buy filler proportional to your volume. A roll of green bubble wrap of 50 x 500 cm costs €5.00 and is small enough to stand upright in a corner. If you regularly ship fragile items, the bubble wrap roll of 500 mm x 500 m for €12.95 is worthwhile — but consider beforehand where that roll will be when you're not using it.
The box method: everything in one bin
The trick to keeping a packing corner functional in a living room is simple: everything that isn't boxes goes into one bin. Tape, dispenser, utility knife, stickers, pen, measuring tape, a stack of folded foil. This bin is kept in the closet and is placed on the table as a whole.
A moving box of 480 x 430 x 330 mm (50 liters) costs €3.50 and is perfect for this. Two of them are often enough: one for tools, one for your stock of boxes and envelopes. They are stackable, you can write on them with a marker to indicate what's inside, and if you move or tidy up, you don't throw them away but simply reuse them.
If you work with a fixed sequence — fold box, product in foil, filler, close, seal, label — you can write these six steps on the inside of the lid. Sounds exaggerated, but it saves mistakes on evenings when you're tired.
What does a starter kit cost?
An honest calculation for someone starting with small, light items:
Item
What you get
Price
Letterbox boxes A6
100 pieces
€ 17.95
Tape dispenser
1 piece with 2 rolls
€ 9.95
Packaging tape
50 meters x 48 mm
€ 3.00
Utility knives
3 pieces
€ 1.95
Bubble wrap
roll 50 x 500 cm
€ 5.00
Storage bin
moving box 50 liters
€ 3.50
In total, €41.35 for materials that will last you a while. Calculate that back to your package: the box is the largest item, the rest is distributed over a hundred shipments and disappears into the decimals. That's exactly why it's a shame to skimp on tape and then have to resend a package.
Two additional things to arrange in a home
Firstly: utility knives and foil should not be left lying around on the table if children or pets are present. A retractable blade knife should be put back in the bin after use, not in the fruit bowl. Large pieces of foil should be cut over the bin, not over the floor.
Secondly: if you're selling to strangers, you want to be able to see if a package has been opened in transit. Security seal stickers with VOID print, 60 pieces cost €9.95 and leave a visible trace if someone removes them. For something more expensive or something that serves as a gift, a white packaging box with magnetic closure of 9.5 x 9 x 10 cm for €5.00 can serve as inner packaging: it goes into your shipping box and holds the product in place.
When your corner becomes too small
Three signs that you need a permanent spot instead of a temporary corner: you no longer put the bin back in the evening, you order more often because you don't have an overview of your stock, and you ship so much that setting up and clearing away together take more time than the packing itself. For the third point, a folding table or a shelf in a cabinet is already a big step forward — you don't have to immediately think about a separate study or office.
Until then, the rule is: fewer sizes, one bin, a fixed order. With that, you can get surprisingly far without it getting in the way at home.
