Buying your first vibrator? Here’s how to soberly choose by type, size, material, and power source — and how to keep a toy clean and tidy.
For those who have never bought one before, choosing a vibrator can be surprisingly confusing. There are hundreds of models, each with its own name, a list of 'modes and functions', and prices ranging from a few euros to well over fifty. This guide helps you choose rationally: what types there are, what size and material mean, what to look for in terms of power, and how to keep a toy clean and tidy. No complicated promises – just the information you need to make a sensible first choice.
An overview of the types
Roughly speaking, most models fall into a few groups. It helps to know which shape suits which purpose, so you don't buy blindly.
Bullet and mini vibrators: small, compact, and usually the cheapest. A good first introduction because they are simple and discreet. The Pocket Rocket Mini with 4 attachments (€4.50) and the 13.3 cm Wand Vibrator (€7.95) are typical entry-level models.
Not sure what appeals to you yet? Start small and simple. An inexpensive, compact model is a great way to discover what you like without spending a lot right away.
Size and shape: starting small pays off
On a product page, you often see three measurements: total length, insertable length, and diameter (or cross-section). For a first purchase, less is usually easier. A model around 9 to 13 centimeters, like the mini-models mentioned, is easy to handle and light in the hand. A larger diameter feels fuller but isn't necessarily 'better' — it's about what feels comfortable, not the most impressive specifications. You can always choose something larger or more specific later when you know what you're looking for.
Material: preferably choose silicone
The material determines how it feels and how easy it is to clean. The most common types:
Silicone: soft, skin-friendly, and easy to clean. The best choice for most people. Note: use silicone toys with a water-based lubricant, as silicone lubricant can damage the surface.
Hard plastic (ABS): transmits vibrations more strongly and is easy to clean, but feels harder.
TPE/TPR: soft and flexible, often cheaper, but slightly more porous — extra thorough cleaning is important here.
The rule of thumb for beginners: a silicone or ABS model in combination with a water-based lubricant, such as the Peep Pleasure Water-based Lubricant (€7.95). Water-based can be combined with almost all materials and washes off easily.
Power: batteries or rechargeable?
There are two options. Battery-powered models are cheap to buy, and you can quickly get them working again with a fresh set of batteries — handy if you don't use them often. Rechargeable models (via USB) are more economical in the long run and often more powerful, but you do need to remember to charge them on time. Also, check if a model is splash-proof or waterproof: that makes cleaning easier. The list of '10 modes' or '20 functions' mainly indicates the number of vibration settings and patterns; more modes isn't automatically better, it just gives you more to try out.
Cleaning and storing
Good maintenance is the boring but most important part. Clean a toy before and after use with lukewarm water and a mild cleaner designed for it, such as the Toy Cleaner Spray 150 ml (€8.95) or the unscented Toy Cleaner 120 ml (€7.95). Then let it dry thoroughly before storing it. Store toys dry and preferably separately from each other — a fabric pouch or its own box prevents materials from rubbing against each other. For battery-powered models, remove the batteries if you won't be using it for a long time to prevent leakage.
