Which massage oil suits which moment, what a warming lotion is for and how to use a massage gun safely. Specific products, tips and what not to do.
After a day at your desk, you usually feel it on the couch in the evening: your neck is stiff, your shoulders are hunched, and your lower back aches. A good chair and breaks help in the long run — but in the meantime, you want something that provides relief today. This buying guide is about what works at home: oil for a relaxing massage, a massage gun for knots, and a warming lotion for muscles that have been still for too long.
What you get from self-massage at home
Massage from a physiotherapist or masseur works better than what you do yourself — that remains true. But not every stiff neck immediately warrants an appointment. For the daily dose of stress and the knots after a moving day or a long work week, working at home is fine. Think of: 10 minutes of oil on your shoulders from your partner, a massage gun on your thighs after a day of running, or a lotion with a warming effect on your lower back before bed.
Important: self-massage is for tension and ordinary muscle pain. For persistent complaints, tingling, radiating pain, or anything that hasn't gone away after a week, consult your doctor or physiotherapist. A massage gun is not a medical device.
Oil: what it's for
Massage oil allows your hands to glide over the skin without friction. The difference with body lotion: oil absorbs slower, stays smooth longer, and spreads better. For a classic back or neck massage, oil works better than a cream.
Almond Massage Oil 250 ml (€ 14.95) — the classic. Neutral scent, glides smoothly, good for long sessions. Almond oil is one of the most commonly used base oils in massage.
Coconut Massage Oil 250 ml (€ 14.95) — slightly firmer feel, subtle scent. Great if you tend to be warm-skinned.
A lotion with a warming effect feels like a slowly warming cloth. It's not actual heat — it's a stimulus on the skin that your brain interprets as warmth. Effect: you notice the muscle underneath better and can massage locally without too much pressure.
The Hot Cream Massage Lotion Arnica 50 ml (€ 12.95) is intended for local use on, for example, shoulders, neck, or lower back. Small bottle because you only need a little. Wash your hands after use — the warming sensation is intense if it accidentally gets into your eye or nose.
Massage gun: for knots and after sports
A massage gun is a small device that vibrates rapidly over a small area. It goes deeper than what you can reach with your hands, and is intended for large muscle groups: thighs, calves, shoulder blades, glutes.
The Rechargeable Massage Gun with 4 Attachments and touchscreen (€ 16.00) is an entry-level model with four attachments and a rechargeable battery. The attachments are important here: the round ball for large muscles, the pointed one for specific spots (e.g., around the shoulder blade), the flat one for larger areas like your thigh, and the fork-shaped one for around your spine (not directly on it).
Where not to use a massage gun
Directly on the spine or bones.
On your neck or throat.
On bruises, wounds, or inflamed areas.
On your abdomen — there are no large muscles there for which this is intended.
Start on the lowest setting, use for a maximum of 1 to 2 minutes per spot, and stop if you feel pain. More intensity does not mean more effect.
Massage powder for a long session
If you really want to take your time — for example, for your partner after a long week — then the Massage Powder for 7.5 liters of Massage Gel (€ 12.95) is a surprising option. You mix it with water to create a light gel. Advantage: large volume for little money, pleasantly smooth, no oil stains on the towel. Disadvantage: you have to mix it, and the gel shouldn't be stored for too long. Great for occasional use; for once a week, oil is easier.

Practical tips
Warm the oil first. Rub a spoonful between your palms before applying to the skin — cold oil is off-putting.
Protect your textiles. Place a large towel under the area you are massaging. Oil on your couch or mattress will not come out.
Wash your hands after applying a warming lotion. Otherwise, the sensation will get into your eyes or nose.
Short and often. Twice 10 minutes a week does more than one hour-long session on Sunday.
Store oil in a dark place and at room temperature. Close the cap tightly — oil can go rancid if it sits in the sun for too long.
