A gag is often bought for its appearance, and that's precisely why it ends up in a drawer afterward. The ball turns out to be too big, the strap too short, or the buckle is positioned so that you can't release it in one motion. These are not matters of taste but of fit, and you can largely sort them out beforehand.
Below is what a gag consists of, what materials you'll encounter, how to pay attention to size, what agreements to make beforehand, and how to keep it clean and intact.
What a gag consists of
Almost every model has three parts, and all three determine how comfortable it is.
The centerpiece. A ball, a bone shape, or an open ring. This part determines how wide the mouth opens.
The strap. The band that goes around the head. Length and adjustability determine whether it fits a small or large head.
The clasp. A buckle or clip. The faster you can release it with one hand, the better.
In inexpensive models, the clasp is usually the weakest point: a thin buckle that jams when the strap is tight. Look at this first, even if you see little detail in a product photo.
Material: silicone, plastic, or metal
The centerpiece is in the mouth, so material is more important here than with most other accessories.

For the strap: the more adjustment holes, the greater the chance it will fit multiple head circumferences. If you share it with someone else, adjustability is not a luxury but a prerequisite. In that case, measure the head circumference just above the ears once, so you know what to expect.
Making agreements before putting it on
A gag makes talking difficult, and that's precisely why it's important to agree on things beforehand. Three things you always arrange:
A non-verbal signal. For example, three taps on the arm, or holding something in the hand that is released. Agree that the signal immediately means: release.
Accessibility of the clasp. Practice once, without anything else, whether you can release the buckle in the dark and with one hand.
Do not leave alone. Stay in the same room and keep it short. In case of doubt, nausea, a blocked nose, or jaw pain: remove it, do not push through.
Furthermore, never put it on tighter than necessary, and do not use it in combination with anything around the neck. These are not medical recommendations but practical agreements; if you have health issues related to breathing or your jaw, discuss them with your doctor or dentist.
Cleaning and storage
Because a gag is in the mouth, cleaning is required after every use and not just when it looks dirty. The practical order:
Rinse the centerpiece immediately after use with lukewarm water.
Keep the strap dry. Synthetic leather and water don't mix well; wipe it down and let it dry completely before storing it.
Store it loosely, not rolled up in a tight ball, and not compressed with metal parts from other items.
If you're sharing it outside a committed relationship, a separate item per person is more practical than constantly cleaning — especially for models with textile straps, which cannot be thoroughly wiped down.
