Always power: choosing a power bank, charging station, or USB hub

Power bank, charging station, or USB hub? Here's how to choose the right charging solution for on the go, your desk, and your home — including the new USB-C rule.
It's a quarter to eight, your phone is at 9 percent, your earbuds are dead, and the power bank you have lying around somewhere is also out of juice. In most homes and on most desks, there's precisely one outlet too few and one charging cable too short. You won't solve that by constantly buying a new charger, but by thinking carefully, just once, about HOW you charge: on the go, at your desk, and at night on your bedside table. This guide compares three solutions — power bank, charging station, and USB hub — so you can choose what suits your situation.
First, this: USB-C has been the standard since late 2024
Since December 28, 2024, new phones, tablets, earbuds, headphones, and many other small portable devices sold in the EU must charge via a USB-C port. This was mandated by the European Parliament with the goal of having one cable for almost everything, fewer chargers in drawers, and less waste. For you, it mainly means convenience — you'll increasingly be able to charge your phone, earbuds, and e-reader with the same USB-C cable. Do you still have older devices with micro-USB or a proprietary connector? They will continue to work; just be aware that you'll still have a mix of cables at home for now.
On the go: a power bank that suits your travel style
A power bank is a rechargeable battery pack you take with you so you can charge your phone without an outlet. The most important metric is its capacity in mAh (milliampere-hour). Roughly speaking: a modern phone battery is around 4,000 to 5,000 mAh, so a 5,000 mAh power bank provides about one full charge, and 10,000 mAh provides two to three recharges.
For a day out, a festival, or just in your bag as an emergency solution, a compact power bank is often enough. The Power bank 3000mAh (€14.95) is small and light and gives your phone just that last push to get you home. If you're traveling for several days, camping, or want to charge your earbuds and tablet too, consider the Solar Lamp with Power Bank (€32.00): a combination of lamp and battery that you charge via USB, handy if you also need light.
When choosing a power bank, pay attention to three things: its capacity (does it match how often you want to recharge?), whether it charges itself via USB-C (nicer, because it uses the same cable), and its weight — a large battery is heavier in your bag.
At your desk: charging station or USB hub?
At home or in the office, a different question arises: you want to connect multiple devices at once. Here, two things are often confused, even though they do different things.
A charging station is designed to power devices: it plugs into the wall and has multiple USB ports to charge phones, earbuds, and a tablet simultaneously. The 8-port USB Charging Station (€14.95) features Fast Charge and PD (Power Delivery), which charges compatible devices faster. Ideal for a family or a shared workspace where everything is plugged in to charge in the evening.
A USB hub is primarily designed to transfer data: you connect it to your laptop or PC and get extra USB ports for a mouse, keyboard, USB stick, or external drive. The Aluminum USB 3.0 Hub with 7 ports (€9.95) instantly gives you seven extra connections. If you want to be able to switch ports on and off individually — for example, to completely power down a device without unplugging the cable — choose a model with switches, like the 4-port USB 3.0 Hub with individual switches (€14.95).
The rule of thumb: if you want to charge, get a charging station. If you want more connections for your computer, get a hub. USB 3.0 is faster than 2.0 and is often identifiable by the blue interior of the port; you'll notice the difference when transferring files.
Keeping cables neat and intact
The weakest link is almost always the cable. Where a cable bends most often — right near the connector — it also breaks first. A set of Cable Protectors (set of 4) (€1.95) slides onto that vulnerable spot and significantly extends its lifespan. Is your outlet or PC just a bit too far away? With a 2-meter USB 3.0 Extension Cable (€9.95), you can bridge that distance without having to move your hub or station. And do you keep losing an earbud while on the go? An anti-loss cord for earbuds (€2.95) keeps them around your neck and within reach.
At a glance: what do you choose?

In brief
Don't think about 'buying another charger,' but about where you charge. On the go, a power bank is your safety net; at your desk, you choose between a charging station (for power) and a USB hub (for connections), and a few euros on cable protectors will prevent most troubles. That way, you'll never have that fight over the last outlet again in the evening.
