Card game, dice game, or something where you have to stand: the difference lies in group size, playing time, and how much explanation people accept. A practical guide with indicative prices.

The moment a game night goes wrong is almost always the same: someone picks up a game with an eight-page manual, three people listen, the rest grab their phones. By the time the first turn is played, the atmosphere is gone.

Choosing a game is therefore less about the game itself and more about the situation: how many people are you with, how long do you want to play, and how much explanation will this company accept. Below, you'll find what works best for each situation, with concrete examples and prices.

First, the three questions that determine your choice

How many players? Below four, you need something that remains fun with two or three players. Above six, half of the classic board games are out, because the waiting time between turns becomes too long.

How long? An evening with dinner and conversations requires something you can start and stop in ten minutes. An evening specifically dedicated to the game can last longer.

How much explanation? Rules you can summarize in one sentence almost always win over rules you have to read aloud. That's not a quality judgment about the game, just an observation about how groups behave.

Large group, little explanation: card games

A card game is the safest choice for a group you don't know very well. Everyone has played one at some point, and the rules can be explained in two minutes.

UNO Flex! (€6.99) is suitable for 2 to 8 players and works well with mixed company, even if children join in. If you just want a deck for free play – shedding games, poker, solitaire – a set of Mini Poker Playing Cards with 54 cards measuring 6 x 4 cm costs only €1.95. That small size is convenient on a crowded table, but less so if someone has poor eyesight.

If you play more often and with multiple decks, an Automatic Card Shuffler for 1 to 2 decks (€12.95) is one of those purchases you don't need until you have it. Especially during poker nights, it noticeably speeds things up.

Poker night: chips make the difference

Poker with coins or tally marks on paper works, but it rarely goes smoothly. Chips make bets visible and keep things clear at a table of six.

For a small table, a set of Poker Chips 6 models – 25 pieces (€9.95) is sufficient. If you're with four to six players, you'll want more: the Poker Chips 50 pieces in 6 colors cost the same, €9.95, and give you enough chips to assign real values. Count on about 20 to 30 chips per player to get through an evening without having to buy more.

If the evening is also a party: drinking games

Drinking games are for adult company, and they work best as an opening to an evening, not as the main event. They break the ice, and then the group continues on its own.

The beer games in the assortment are themed card games, all €12.95: 30 Year Beer Game, 16 Year Beer Game, Graduation Beer Game, and Dad's Beer Game. The theme mainly determines if the game works as a gift; the gameplay is similar.

If you want something simpler, dice are enough. A set of Beer Game Dice – 2 pieces costs €4.00; the Beer Game Dice XXL are €9.95 and especially practical because everyone at a long table can read them. If you're pouring into small glasses, a Shot Glass Set of 6 pieces à 60 ml for €3.00 is a cheap addition.

For beer pong, accessories are part of the show: Beer Pong Hats with inflatable cups (€19.95) and a Beer Pong Apron (€14.95). Whatever you play: keep water and something to eat on the table, and let people easily drop out without a fuss.

Movement instead of sitting

If everyone has been sitting all day, a game where you have to stand often works better than another hour at the table. The advantage: people can join and leave without stopping the game.

Small group or in-between moments

With two or three people, big games are rarely fun. Then you want something compact that you can quickly put on the table.

The 99-in-1 Game Set with dice and checkerboard (€14.95) is a typical example: in practice, you use four or five of the ninety-nine, but those four are always at hand. For shorter moments, table games such as the Basketball Desktop Game (€9.95) or the Puck Power Shooting Game (€10.00) work well. The Shoot the Duck Shooting Game (€19.95) also falls into that category: five minutes of explanation, done.

A workable basic set

If you want to be prepared without a cupboard full of games, you can go a long way with four things:

  1. A card game everyone knows, plus a separate deck of playing cards.
  2. A set of chips, so a poker night doesn't become an improvisation.
  3. A dice game for when it needs to remain informal.
  4. One game where you have to stand, for when the table takes too long.

With this, you can cover almost any evening, from a quiet Sunday with three people to a birthday with fifteen. What you don't need is the game you bought last year because it looked good and is still in its foil.

Browse the Games collection for the full range, Card Games for playing cards and shufflers, and Beer Games for drinking games. For the latter two, pay attention to the description: some of the offerings are intended for adult company.
